PORTLAND, Maine (AP) ? Police investigating the disappearance of a toddler from her father's central Maine home two weeks ago said Friday they believe foul play was involved, but investigators tried to remain optimistic even as the job of law enforcement officials becomes more difficult with each passing day.

Waterville police Chief Joseph Massey announced Friday night that the case "has evolved from the search for a missing child to a criminal investigation."

In a statement, the chief said the conclusion about the disappearance of 20-month-old Ayla Reynolds was based on evidence that has been gathered over the past two weeks, but he didn't elaborate. He said state police would take the lead on the investigation.

On Friday, a team of evidence technicians from Massachusetts joined Maine State Police at the Waterville home where Ayla was last seen and was reported missing by her father.

"All of our efforts continue to locate Ayla. Although this is beginning the third week, we remain hopeful," Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland said. He declined to say what the technicians were looking for.

Ayla's father, Justin DiPietro, told police he last saw her when he put her to bed the night of Dec. 16. He reported her missing when she was nowhere to be found the following morning.

Before she vanished, Ayla was wearing green polka dot pajamas with the words "Daddy's Princess" on them and had a soft cast on her broken left arm. Extensive searches of woods, waterways, fields and private properties around Waterville, a city of 16,000 residents 20 miles north of the state capital, Augusta, have failed to turn up anything.

The day after Christmas, investigators announced a $30,000 reward, the largest ever for a missing person case in Maine, for information leading to Ayla's whereabouts.

McCausland on Friday declined to discuss whether any of the 300-plus leads had borne fruit for investigators. He also declined to talk about suspects or evidence that has been gathered. He said DiPietro and Ayla's mother, Trista Reynolds, of Portland, were cooperating with investigators.

There were news reports Friday that two cars seized from the Waterville home were returned to DiPietro and an unidentified woman. McCausland declined to confirm those reports.

Investigators put up crime scene tape at the father's home last week. Outside the home, about 75 miles from Portland, a pile of teddy bears and stuffed animals were piled at a makeshift shrine.

Ayla was placed in her father's care while her mother was in a substance abuse rehabilitation program, which she completed.

Trista Reynolds, making an appeal on national television on Thursday, said that she had questions for DiPietro but that he had not returned her calls since their daughter went missing. She previously raised concerns about Ayla's treatment while in her father's care after the girl broke her arm, which police said happened in an accidental fall. She had no further comment Friday night, her sister said.

DiPietro couldn't be reached for comment Friday night. The Associated Press has been unable to find a telephone listing for him, and he has not been at his home, which is empty.

A few days before Christmas, DiPietro, addressing the public for the first time, said in a statement he had "no idea what happened to Ayla or who is responsible." He said his family and friends would do "everything we can to assist in this investigation and get Ayla back home."

"I would never do anything to hurt my child," he said Wednesday in another statement.

Former FBI profiler Clint Van Zandt said Friday that the odds of finding a child lessen if he or she isn't found within the first day or two of disappearing. But he said there's always reason for optimism, noting that there are even rare cases of missing children who turn up years later in someone's care.

"If you don't get this child back real quickly, you know that it gets harder and harder," he said. "But you can't give up hope."

Scott Bernstein, founder of Child Recovery International, a New York City-based organization that helps find missing children, agreed the first hours of an investigation are key in tracking down missing children as young as Ayla. Although the situation looks bleak, there's still room for hope, he said.

"One percent hope ? but I'll go for that 1 percent hope," he said.

After Ayla went missing, law enforcement officials likely divided their investigation into two parts, one team looking at people with access to her, such as relatives and family friends, and another group looking at the potential for an abduction by an outsider or stranger, Van Zandt said. Under both scenarios, he said, the odds are that the person who took Ayla knew something about her or her family.

Strangers' abductions of children do occur, but they're rare, accounting for only 105 to 115 children out of 750,000 to 900,000 missing-persons cases each year in the United States, Van Zandt said.

Van Zandt, who has worked similar cases, said Ayla's disappearance, which once had more than 80 searchers and law enforcement officers involved, has been difficult for law enforcers as well as for distraught family members.

"As an FBI agent working these cases, you never turn off the emotional porch light," he said. "You always leave on the light with the hope that the child will come home again."

(AP) ? Three security contractors including two Americans were released by Iraqi army forces Tuesday after they were held for more than two weeks, the chairman of the House Committee on Homeland Security announced as he demanded a full report on the episode.

Republican Rep. Peter King of New York identified the men as Army veteran Alex Antiohos of West Babylon, New York, National Guardsman Jonas March of Savannah, Georgia, and Kevin Fisher of Fiji.

King said they were working for a security firm when Iraqi Ministry of Defense officials rejected paperwork prepared on their behalf by the Iraqi Ministry of Interior and began holding them on Dec. 9.

The men weren't charged with any crimes and King said it appeared that they were not injured.

He said Antiohos, who lives on Long Island, spoke to his wife Tuesday evening, and he was expected to be home later this week.

"She said he seems to be doing well," he said.

King said they were released after efforts by his office, the State Department, the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad, the Defense Department and the White House.

He said he will demand answers from the Iraqis as well from U.S. authorities about how the incident was handled after they learned about the men.

"We're going to have thousands of contractors over there, including many Americans. Can the Iraqis just take them off the street and hold them? This is a terrible precedent. We have to get to the bottom of this," he said.

The New York congressman said he was concerned that U.S. military authorities had not been notified by the U.S. Embassy that the men were being held and that embassy representatives had not visited the men when he learned about it from Antiohos' wife last week.

"We have to find out if there could have been better coordination between all the agencies to make sure something like this doesn't happen again," King said.

U.S. troops completed a full withdrawal from Iraq this month after nearly nine years of war.

"This should be a bit of a wake-up call as to whether the situation really is deteriorating in Iraq," he added. "Iraq was supposed to be an ally. We liberated Iraq. Yet they hold these men for 18 days. ... It's inexcusable that they were treated this way by a supposed ally."

India overtakes Brazil as sixth largest vehicle maker

Vehicle makerWith 7 million units, it is projected to overtake Japan, Germany and Korea by 2017; to beat initial estimate of becoming third-largest market globally by 2020.

India has overtaken Brazil as the world?s sixth largest automobile manufacturing country, going by data on the first six months this year, according to the international organisation of motor vehicle manufacturers.

The Organisation Internationale des Constructeurs d?Automobiles also reveals that India is steadily inching its way up on the global charts to make its mark as the third largest automobile market over the next five years, even as high interest rates and fuel prices have put a spanner on automobile sales in the domestic market. In 2009, India had raced past Spain in annual automobile production to become the seventh largest vehicle-manufacturing country in the world. India is now projected to overtake Japan, Germany and Korea to sell seven million units by 2017. This is way ahead of the initial estimate of becoming the third largest market globally by 2020.

?

?

As many as 2.04 million vehicles were produced in India till June this year, 20 per cent higher than the 1.71 million units rolled out in Brazil.

China continued to be the frontrunner with production of 9.16 million units till June, while India?s share in vehicle production, as compared to China, has improved sharply between January and June this year.

While last year, India produced a sixth of the number of vehicles rolled out in China, till June this year the country produced more than a fifth of the number of vehicles manufactured in east Asian nation. India?s market share in global vehicle production moved up marginally to five per cent from the earlier 4.5 per cent during this period.

PricewaterhouseCoopers says India is likely to produce seven million light vehicles of up to five tonnes by 2017. ?Though vehicle sales have slowed down this year, the fundamentals remain strong,? notes Abdul Majeed, partner and head of automotive practice in the global professional services firm. ?By 2017, India is likely to emerge as the third-largest market in the world after China and the US.?

What is boosting business confidence is that despite the economic uncertainties prevailing in global and domestic markets, India remained among the fastest-growing automobile markets in the world till October this year. While US topped the charts growing by 10.1 per cent to sell 10.54 million vehicles, Germany and India followed close behind growing by around eight per cent (to 2.93 mn units) and 7.8 per cent (to 2.73 mn units), respectively.

Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers notes that the vehicle penetration in India is one of the lowest in the world ? at 10 cars per 1000 people as against 565 cars and 453 cars per 1000 people in Germany and the US respectively. ?So,? says Sugato Sen, senior director of the association ? the market will only grow over long term.?

Estimates available with market research firm J D Power show the automobile market in India is set to grow three-fold to sell over 11 million vehicles by 2020.

If we take a closer look at the sales data of the top six vehicle-manufacturing countries in the world currently, the domestic automobile market in India has already overgrown that of Korea at 2.73 million units. Till October, the Korean market had grown by 2.8 per cent to sell 1.23 million units. Vehicles sales in the country have fallen short of Germany (the fourth largest automobile market) by mere 200,000 units.

On the exports front, India stands at around a tenth of the 3.77 mn units exported by Germany till October this year. What is intriguing is that India is fast narrowing the gap with China. Till October this year China (which accounts for 24 per cent of global automobile production) exported only 703,341 units, while Indian exports grew by 17.45 per cent to 489,675 units.

Japan fared the worst in the current year hit by the earthquake and tsunami in March this year. While vehicle production dropped by a whopping 17 per cent to 6.71 million units due to insufficiency in supply of components, domestic sales declined by 20 per cent to 3.47 mn units between Jan and October this year.

Wives in ads, kids on the bus as GOP voting nears (AP)

CONCORD, N.H. ? Mitt Romney's wife gushes about his silly side and devotion to their five sons and 16 grandchildren. Rick Santorum's college-age daughter opines online about missing the campus coffee shop and chats with friends about their Friday night plans. Jon Huntsman's daughters generate much-needed buzz for him with a joint Twitter account and online videos, including at least one that went viral.

Days away from voting in the Republican presidential race, the path to the nomination is quickly becoming a crowded family affair with spouses and offspring pitching in and doing far more than just smiling from the sidelines.

Ann Romney, Anita Perry and Callista Gingrich are starring in new TV ads for the husbands they've loyally campaigned for. Romney extols her husband's character and says "to me that makes a huge difference" in a candidate. Perry tells the "old-fashioned American story" of how she and her husband were high school sweethearts who had to wait until he was done flying airplanes around the world for the Air Force before they could marry. Callista Gingrich wishes the nation a Merry Christmas "from our family to yours" in husband Newt Gingrich's new holiday-themed TV ad.

Candidate kids, including those born to Michele Bachmann and Ron Paul, are helping, too, acting as surrogates, strategists and, in some cases, sounding boards for parents competing for the right to challenge President Barack Obama next fall.

"There are times when I wonder why I'm not sitting in the coffee shop on campus with my friends, lightheartedly discussing ('Saturday Night Live') videos, how bad the cafeteria is, what our plans are for Friday night or how absolutely swamped we are with school work," Santorum's daughter Elizabeth lamented in a recent blog post. "But this is where God wanted me."

She has taken time off from her junior year at the University of Dallas to serve as a self-described "field staffer/phone banker/chauffeur/surrogate speaker," for her father, primarily in the leadoff caucus state of Iowa.

Her father, who hopes Iowa's socially conservative voters turn out for him on caucus night Jan. 3, rolled out an ad late last week featuring the entire Santorum clan, including the family German shepherd, Schotzy. The spot highlights his 21-year marriage to his wife, Karen, notes that he has coached Little League and introduces viewers to the youngest of the couple's seven children, Isabella, born in 2008 with a genetic disorder.

Sometimes the family members campaign with the candidates and other times they go it alone.

Such family involvement carries risks and benefits. The stories they tell often humanize the candidates and help voters relate to them. But the things they say, and do, can sometimes cause headaches for the campaign advisers who are left to try to figure out a way out.

While Rick Perry spent several days campaigning in Iowa recently, his wife was hundreds of miles away in New Hampshire emphasizing his small-town upbringing and conservative values at a retirement community chapel. Audience members then peppered her with detailed questions about such subjects as taxes, immigration and the death penalty.

"She handled them quite well," said Sid Schoeffler, an independent voter from Concord. "When she knew the answer or knew the campaign's story line, she recited it. And when she didn't know, she said so. I thought that was refreshing."

"Compared to what I expected, she made a favorable impression," he said. "But whether it's enough to swing my vote, I don't know yet."

Earlier in the year, as Bachmann rose in public opinion, her husband, Marcus, was forced to defend his Christian counseling business from claims that its therapies included "curing" people of being gay. With Bachmann now near the back of the GOP pack in polls, Marcus Bachmann joined her at the start of her bus tour of Iowa's 99 counties but was quickly replaced by four of their five children.

"My husband had to go home. We're small-business owners and someone had to go home and mind the store," Bachmann told one crowd. And at one point, Bachmann, who began losing her voice in the middle of the jam-packed tour, turned over the microphone to son Harrison, a teacher who talks up his family's ties to the state, and teased: "Harrison, say some nice things about me and you'll get extra cookies."

In Paul's case, he's probably hoping validation from his son, Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., a favorite of the tea party, will give him a boost with that pivotal constituency in Iowa. Rand Paul is also appearing in a television ad for his father.

Romney's five-son family and wife of more than four decades have long been a part of his presidential campaigns. But the spotlight has been shining more brightly on his wife and their brood in recent weeks as the campaign seeks to cast the former Massachusetts governor as a person of "steadiness and constancy" while drawing a contrast with the thrice-married Gingrich.

Ann Romney also has spoken openly about how her husband supported her through her struggle with multiple sclerosis.

Huntsman's wife and the couple's three oldest daughters are near-constant companions in New Hampshire, the only state where the former Utah governor is earnestly campaigning. His daughters recently generated a huge amount of buzz with a video spoof of an ad by former rival Herman Cain. They donned oversized glasses and fake mustaches to look like Cain's campaign manager.

"We are shamelessly promoting our dad like no other candidate's family has," one daughter said in the ad. "But then again, no one's ever seen a trio like the Jon2012 girls."

TV Guide's Best TV Episodes of 2011

TV Guide:

From Oprah's surprisingly low-key farewell to the year's most soul-crushing break-up on "The Good Wife" (Kalicia, no!), the year was packed with fantastic hours of television -- pretty much all of which we watched. There were teary goodbyes ("Friday Night Lights's" Texas forever! "Smallville's" tights and flights!), tense face-offs (why can't all CIA interrogations take place on the front porch of a cabin, like on "Homeland"?) and of course we made room for a little "Glee" (because certain underdogs deserved it).

Air Jordan shoppers mob stores, some pepper-sprayed

Across the country, the long-awaited release of Nike retro Air Jordan basketball shoes on Friday resulted in fights, arrests, and the use pepper spray as police tried to calm frenzied shoppers, many of whom had waited outside stores overnight.

In Richmond, Calif., a man was arrested after he fired a gun while waiting in line, KTVU TV reported.

In Seattle, Tukwila police officer Mike Murphy said more than 1,000 people lined up to buy shoes at 4 a.m. at four stores in the Westfield Southcenter mall.

He said police used pepper spray on about 20 people who were fighting, while one man was arrested for assault after police say he pushed an officer.

"He did not get his shoes; he went to jail," Murphy said.

"It was not a nice, orderly group of shoppers," Murphy said. "There were a lot of hostile and disorderly people."

Murphy said they smelled marijuana and found alcohol containers at the scene.

The stores sold out and all but about 50 people got their Air Jordans, he added.

Carlisa Williams said she joined the crowd at Southcenter for the experience and ended up buying two pairs of shoes ? one for her and one for her brother. But she said she'll never do anything like it again.

"I don't understand why they're so important to people," Williams told KING-TV. "They're just shoes at the end of the day. It's not worth risking your life over."

Hundreds of customers also lined up outside shoe stores in downtown Seattle and at a mall in Federal Way.

$605 on eBay
The Air Jordan XI Retro "Concord" sneakers, costing $180 retail, are based on a design that first went on sale in 1995.

The new shoes are already being advertised on eBay with asking bids of as much as $605.

Adding to frenzied demand from fashion-conscious shoppers and sneaker collectors, some stores have been given as few as 12 pairs each.

Here's a sampling of incidents elsewhere:

  • In Lithona, Ga., police told Fox 5 Atlanta that up to 20 squad cars responded to a mall after a large crowd broke down a door to get inside before a store opened. Police escorted most of the people back outside, but took four into custody. Officers said they had to break a car window to get two toddlers out after a woman went in after the shoes. They said she was taken into custody when she returned to the car.
  • In Arlington, Va., a large crowd was waiting outside the Fashion Centre at Pentagon City mall which let in a few buyers at midnight and then at again 6 a.m., NBC Washington reported. Police had to come for crowd control, and many customers left angry.
  • At St. Charles Towne Center in Waldorf, Md., people pushed open the doors at several entrances to the mall. Initially, they lined up outside the six stores that were set to sell the shoes, but people began pushing each other, trying to keep their places in line, and the scene turned chaotic. No individual stores were broken into. Officers arrested four juveniles and one adult for disorderly conduct.
  • In Dayton, Ohio, fights broke out among shoppers outside a store, and some people sold their spots in line.
  • In Indianapolis, Ind., hundreds stampeded a store, a few losing shoes and jackets along the way. One girl was nearly trampled, WTHR TV reported. "I actually jumped over the girl that fell. There was a few people on the ground but I jumped over 'em and kept running," said one shopper. Another shopper said she "was able to be the first one in, but I kinda hit my hand on the door. I was bleeding but it's all good. It was worth it."
  • In Taylor, Mich., about 100 people forced their way into a shopping center around 5:30 a.m., damaging decorations and overturning benches. One man was arrested.

It's not the first time the Nikes have caused an uproar. Some people were mugged or even killed for early versions of the Air Jordan shoe, which Nike Inc. created in 1985.

The shoe has been a consistent hit since then with sneaker fans. A new edition was launched each year, and release dates had to be moved to the weekends at some points to keep kids from skipping school to get a pair.

No one anticipated the hysteria around the original Air Jordan, which spawned a subculture of collectors willing to wait hours to buy the latest pair. But the shopping frenzy over the shoe had died down in recent years.

These latest incidents instead seem to be part of trend of increasing acts of violence at retailers this holiday shopping season, such as the shopper who pepper-sprayed others at a Walmart in Los Angeles on Black Friday and crowds looting a clothing store in New York.

Nike, based in Beaverton, Ore., issued a statement Friday afternoon saying: "We are extremely concerned to hear of the reported crowd incidents ... Consumer safety and security is of paramount importance. We encourage anyone wishing to purchase our product to do so in a respectful and safe manner."

The Oregonian reported the Air Jordan appeal is only partly nostalgia for the former NBA star Michael Jordan. Collectors known as "sneakerheads" save them for special occasions or never take them out of the box.

The Associated Press and Reuters contributed to this report.

Sadrists call for new elections in Iraq (AP)

BAGHDAD ? The leader of a powerful anti-American political party in Iraqi parliament is calling for new elections as the country's worst political crisis in years escalates.

Bahaa al-Aaraji, the head of the Sadrists' bloc in parliament, said Monday new elections are needed because of instability in the country.

The Sadrists are loyal to anti-American cleric Muqtada al-Sadr and are partners in a Shiite-dominated government coalition with Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki.

The prime minister is currently in a political showdown with the top Sunni political figure, Vice President Tariq al-Hashemi, after the government issued an arrest warrant for al-Hashemi.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

BAGHDAD (AP) ? A suicide bomber set off a car bomb Monday at a checkpoint leading to the Iraqi Interior Ministry, killing seven people and injuring 32 others, officials said.

The attack followed a series of bombings last week that killed up to 70 people in a single day, increasing fears about Iraq's future after U.S. troops withdrew this month.

Two police officers said the bomber struck during morning rush hour, hitting one of many security barriers set up around the ministry's building. Five policemen were among the dead, they said.

Two doctors at nearby hospitals confirmed the causality figures.

"We first heard a thunderous explosion and then saw a ball of fire," said Mustafa Mohammed, 42, an employee at the nearby Ministry of Oil who was with other employees in a bus when the bomb went off.

"The car pulled over and we left it immediately to see all the area engulfed with smoke and the bodies of the injured or killed people were lying on the ground," Mohammed said.

Also Monday, a roadside bomb hit a passing army patrol in the Abu Ghraib area west of Baghdad, killing two soldiers and injuring two others, a police officer and a doctor said.

All spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to release information.

No one has claimed responsibility for either attack, but suicide attacks and attacks targeting Iraqi security officials are usually carried out by the al-Qaida in Iraq terror group.

U.S. and some Iraqi officials have warned of a resurgence of Sunni and Shiite militants and an increase in violence after the full U.S. troop withdrawal.

Adding to Iraq's troubles is an increase in political tension stemming from a showdown between the Shiite prime minister, Nouri al-Maliki, and the top Sunni political leader in the country.

Al-Maliki's government has issued an arrest warrant for Sunni Vice President Tariq al-Hashemi on charges that he ran hit squads against government officials.

Al-Hashemi has denied the charges and said they are politically motivated.

NFL: Rams like aggressive play of Harvey Dahl

ST. LOUIS -- The St. Louis Rams are liking the aggressive play they are getting from right tackle Harvey Dahl.

Even if it sometimes comes at a price.

The former Fallon and Wolf Pack standout who in his first season with the Rams was called for holding during Sunday's loss to the Bengals with his team 13-6 at the time.

He got an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, too, perhaps because he used a profanity that was picked up on the microphone of referee Jerome Boger. It was just a matter of time before the play -- with the audio -- wound up on YouTube.

Dahl said the incident was atypical for him although he is known for his physical style of play. And the Rams (2-12) need every spark they can get this season with a visit to Pittsburgh (10-4) today up next.

"I learned a lesson. You can't say anything to the refs. That's my fault," Dahl said Thursday. "That was frustration there. I made a bad situation worse. Obviously, you've got to stay composed there. I hurt my team. I didn't know the microphone was on."

Rams coach Steve Spagnuolo did not delve into the correctness of the call on Dahl.

"I'm going to have to give it the old, 'No comment,'" Spagnuolo said.

Dahl has had a solid season. He started the first 11 games at right guard before sliding over to right tackle the past four weeks. He started 43 games at right guard for Atlanta before coming to St. Louis.

The Rams have gotten what they wanted this year from Dahl, offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels said.

"When we got Harvey, we thought we were going to get a guy that was going to add some toughness," McDaniels said. "He's a great worker. He's a great example for what we want our young guys to see. He's been so unselfish with his role and what we've asked of him this year that I couldn't say enough good things about him. (I'm) real glad to have him on our football team."

Running back Steven Jackson agreed.

"He brings that attitude, that edge that you want upfront out of your guys," Jackson said. "He's pretty athletic and versatile that he can play two positions. You can see why he was really sought after in free agency."

Dahl moved to tackle when Jason Smith suffered a concussion against Dallas.

"It's a challenge," Dahl said of the move. "It's different technique. I feel like it's going all right. I think it's working out well. To help out and doing what the team needs is important. They ran it by me and I was open to it."

That versatility has caught Spagnuolo's eye.

"It's not easy to go from guard to tackle," Spagnuolo said. "With some of the people you see out on the edge there, he's going to be challenged again this week and yet I think he functions really well. That's a credit to him. I'm sure glad we've got him and I like the kind of guy he is. He's good for our football team and he's been really key with all the injuries we've had to be able to put him out there at right tackle."

While Dahl has played well at tackle, Spagnuolo said he hasn't pondered making it permanent.

"I'm not sure I've even thought that way yet," Spagnuolo said. "But I know one thing, it's nice to have a guy that can do both. It really is, that's good to have."

Japan to enter dollar swap agreement with India - Nikkei

TOKYO | Sun Dec 25, 2011 2:33am GMT

TOKYO (Reuters) - The Japanese government is considering a dollar swap arrangement with India to provide emergency liquidity in case the European debt crisis reaches emerging economies, the Nikkei business newspaper said on Sunday.

The agreement would set the total swap arrangement at $10 billion (6 billion pounds), or 780 billion yen, the Nikkei said.

Both countries are looking to sign off on the arrangement next Wednesday, when leaders meet at a bilateral summit, the paper said.

The currency swaps are expected to support the Indian rupee as it continues to weaken against the greenback and Europe's sovereign debt crisis hits India's exports.

The dollar-swap arrangement with India would follow a similar agreement with South Korea in October.

Prometheus Trailer: An Epic Space Odyssey Begins

The trailer for Prometheus has arrived, and the latest space odyssey from director Ridley Scott (Alien, Blade Runner) looks like it may live up to its considerable hype.

From this introductory look, the film bears some resemblance to Alien - not just with its stunning, otherworldly visuals, but its theme of desperation against rising odds.

Many think the film is a prequel to Alien, a theory Scott denies, but it could be something of a companion piece, a film that exists in a parallel universe. Just a theory.

Starring Charlize Theron, Idris Elba, Michael Fassbender and Noomi Rapace, the film touches down in theaters summer 2012. Here's the Prometheus trailer ...

Dutch Cabinet: new guidelines on animal slaughter (AP)

AMSTERDAM ? The Dutch government said Wednesday it will study new standards for ritual slaughter to satisfy animal rights activists without infringing on ancient Jewish and Muslim traditions, and will not ban the practice outright.

The announcement that a commission will be appointed to draw up a tightened regime for supervising the slaughter followed a political deadlock in the Dutch parliament.

By a wide margin, the lower house approved a ban earlier this year on the traditional method of cutting the animal's throat without stunning it first. After an outcry that the ban would violate religious freedoms, support evaporated when the bill was sent to the upper house this month for approval.

Undersecretary for Agriculture Henk Bleker's office said the commission will draw up standards on how long animals can remain conscious and on educating slaughterers. It will include registration and quality requirements for slaughterhouses.

A small animal rights party proposed the ban and it won backing from a large anti-Islam political party and a solid majority of Dutch voters, leading to easy passage in Parliament's Second Chamber.

But Christian political parties opposed it from the start out of concern for religious minorities. After protests from Jewish and Muslim groups, both local and international, centrist parties on the left and right reversed their position in the Senate. They said reforms to slaughtering practices are a higher priority than the relatively small number of religious slaughters.

Muslims, mostly immigrants from Turkey and Morocco, represent about 1 million of the 16 million Dutch population. The once-strong Jewish community numbers around 50,000 after most were deported and killed by the Nazis during World War II.

In both religions, dietary law prescribes that animals' throats be cut swiftly with a razor-sharp knife while they are still conscious, so that they bleed to death quickly.

Much of the debate, extending over several years, focused on the suffering of the animal.

The Royal Dutch Veterinary Association said it believes slaughtering cattle in particular while still conscious inflicts unnecessary pain, but Jewish groups said no scientific evidence exists that a cow properly slaughtered by a trained and ordained slaughterer suffers more than if it is stunned.

(This version corrects Bleker's first name.)

Steve Jobs awarded posthumous Grammy for 'significant contributions to music'

It's pretty difficult to argue that both Apple's iPod and -- to an even greater extent -- its contentious iTunes software haven't had a massive impact on the music industry. The Recording Academy has decided to recognize this, naming the former CEO and Apple co-founder Steve Jobs for a Trustees Award for "outstanding contributions to the industry in a non-performing capacity." It will be the second Grammy to celebrate Apple's contributions to the music industry -- its work in recording netted it a Technical Grammy exactly ten years ago.

Early rally fades; stocks down for the week

By Associated Press

An early rally faded on the stock market Friday, leaving indexes down about 3 percent for the week as worries resurfaced about a breakup of the euro. BlackBerry maker Research in Motion plunged after slashing its forecast for holiday sales.

The Dow Jones industrial average closed down 2.42 points Friday, less than 0.1 percent, at 11,866.93. It had been up as many as 99 points after the Italian government won a confidence vote on austerity measures. It turned mixed around midday as Fitch warned that it might downgrade the debt of Italy, Spain and four other countries that use the euro.

Materials and industrial companies rose, signaling that traders expect the economic recovery to remain on track. Utilities, health care and consumer staples companies lagged the market as traders sold stocks that are considered to be safer when the economy is weak.

The Dow Jones industrial average broke a three-day slump Thursday on news that claims for unemployment benefits plunged last week and measures of manufacturing in the Northeast improved dramatically. The Dow lost 360 points over the first three days of the week as investors questioned whether Europe's agreement to closer coordinate fiscal policy would be enough to save the euro from a catastrophic breakup.

Some analysts believe nervousness about Europe this fall and winter pushed stock prices lower than their fair value. Investment adviser Uri Landesman, president of Platinum Partners, expects stocks to rise into next year because of the growing likelihood that economic news and European headlines will remain positive.

"The odds are, the news is going to be better than the market is discounting," Landesman said. He said the market is near the low end of its recent trading range, and a dose of positive news could set off a mini-rally. Any market moves next week could be sharp as trading volume thins out before the Christmas holiday, Landesman said.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 3.89, or 0.3 percent, to 1,219.65. The Nasdaq composite index rose 14.32, or 0.6 percent, to 2,555..33 The Dow is down 2.6 percent for the week; the S&P 2.8 percent. The Nasdaq lost 3.5 percent.

The yield on the 10-year Treasury note plunged to 1.85 percent from 1.93 percent earlier Friday after the government said consumer prices were unchanged last month, suggesting that inflation remains low. Low inflation makes bonds more attractive because it doesn't diminish the buying power of the fixed return a bond provides over time.

The gains were broad. Eight of the 10 industry groups in the S&P 500 index rose, led by materials and industrial companies. U.S. factories in some regions have seen shipments and orders rise this month, according to two surveys released Wednesday. Materials companies are benefiting from soaring commodity prices.

Research In Motion Ltd. plummeted 11 percent after the company said late Thursday that new phones seen as critical to its future will be delayed until late next year. RIM also is taking a big loss on unsold tablet computers and predicted that its BlackBerry sales will fall sharply during the holiday sales season.

Online game developer Zynga Inc. fell 5 percent in its first day of trading on the Nasdaq. The maker of Farmville's initial public offering was priced late Thursday at $10 per share, raising $1 billion. That means the San Francisco company can boast the biggest Internet IPO since Google Inc. first offered shares in 2004.

Among the other companies making big moves:

  • New York-area cable TV provider Cablevision Systems Corp. plunged 9 percent following the sudden departure of its chief operating officer, Tom Rutledge.
  • Adobe Systems Inc. jumped 6.6 percent after the software maker reported earnings and revenues that were far better than what analysts had expected. Analyst Walter Pritchard at Citigroup said the quarter was a "blow-out when most expected weakness."

Kobe Bryant's wife files for divorce (AP)

ORANGE, Calif. ? Kobe Bryant's wife, who stood by her husband when he was charged with sexual assault in 2003, filed for divorce on Friday from the Los Angeles Lakers star, citing irreconcilable differences after a decade of marriage.

Vanessa Bryant signed the papers on Dec. 1. Kobe Bryant signed his response on Dec. 7 and it was filed Friday, according to the documents.

"The Bryants have resolved all issues incident to their divorce privately with the assistance of counsel and a judgment dissolving their marital status will be entered in 2012," according to a statement from a representative for the couple.

In the filing, Vanessa Bryant asked for joint legal and physical custody of the couple's two daughters, Natalia, 8, and Gianna, 5. Kobe Bryant asked for the same in his response. Vanessa Bryant also requested spousal support.

The Bryants "ask that in the interest of our young children and in light of the upcoming holiday season the public respect our privacy during this difficult time," according to the statement.

Bryant met his future wife in 1999 on a music video shoot when Vanessa Laine was 18 years old. Six months later, she and the then-21-year-old Bryant became engaged. They married on April 18, 2001.

The Bryants have been through trying times together.

Vanessa Bryant appeared at a news conference with her husband when he was charged with sexually assaulting a 19-year-old woman who worked at the exclusive Lodge & Spa at Cordillera near Vail, Colo., in 2003. She held his hand and stroked it tenderly as the NBA star admitted he was guilty of adultery ? but nothing else. Earlier she had issued her own statement to the media, vowing to stand by her husband.

"I know that my husband has made a mistake ? the mistake of adultery," she said in the statement at the time. "He and I will have to deal with that within our marriage, and we will do so. He is not a criminal."

A year later, prosecutors dropped the criminal charge against Kobe Bryant because the woman did not want to go ahead with a trial.

Last year, Kobe and Vanessa Bryant settled litigation with a former maid who accused the NBA star's wife of harassment. The Bryants countersued Maria Jimenez for violating a confidentiality agreement by talking to reporters about the family.

Katy Perry Enlists B.o.B for 'One That Got Away' Remix

MTV's Artist of the Year's new record should be available for purchase next week.

Katy Perry has teamed up with B.o.B for a remix of her song "The One That Got Away" from her album Teenage Dream.

Perry's label, Capitol, has submitted the track to radio, and it should be available for Katy Cats to buy by next week, according to Billboard.com. Perry has achieved a record five #1 singles off the album to date. Michael Jackson is the only other artist to have done the same, with his Bad album. However, if "The One" goes to #1, Katy will become the first artist with six #1 Hot 100 singles off of one album.

This is not the first time Katy has remixed one of her singles. Earlier this year, she worked with Kanye West on "E.T." (the duo won a VMA for Best Collaboration for the video) and later, Missy Elliott got onboard a remix of Perry's single "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)."

Perry's chart dominance was one of the factors that helped make her MTV's 2011 Artist of the Year. She also had the #10 song of the year with "Firework."

"Hi everyone at MTV! I just want to say thank you for this amazing award," she said in a video message. "To be Artist of the Year, a whole 365 days, that's pretty cool. I wasn't really allowed to watch MTV growing up, so this feels really validating," she said. "And I've had a fantastic year, a great tour and a great run, and you guys have been so a part of it and such a big reason why. So thank you so much. I really appreciate it."

Protecting confidential data with math

ScienceDaily (Dec. 16, 2011) ? Statistical databases (SDBs) are collections of data that are used to gather and analyze information from a variety of sources. The data may be derived from sales transactions, customer files, voter registrations, medical records, employee rosters, product inventories, or other compilations of facts and figures.

Because database security requires multiple processes and controls, it presents huge security challenges to organizations. With the computerization of databases in healthcare, forensics, telecommunications, and other fields, ensuring this kind of security has become increasingly important.

In a paper recently published in the SIAM Journal on Discrete Mathematics, authors Rudolf Ahlswede and Harout Aydinian analyze a security-control model for statistical databases.

"Providing privacy and confidentiality in SDBs is not a new issue," Aydinian points out. "Privacy interests have evolved from the very first census in the United States. Recorded protests until the mid-20th century reflect constitutional issues resulting from the requirement for U.S. residents to provide sensitive personal information. Questions on census forms about diseases, mortgage values, and other items have raised many concerns."

While such databases are very helpful in aggregating data, there is a risk that confidential information about an individual's record may be deliberately compromised. "Since such data sets also contain sensitive information, such as the disease of an individual, or the salary of an employee, it is necessary to provide security against the disclosure of confidential information," says Aydinian. "Even in cases where a user has no direct access to sensitive information, sometimes confidential data about an individual can be inferred by correlating enough statistics."

Typically, statistical databases are designed to only accept queries that involve specific statistical functions (such as sum, average, count, min, max, etc.). However, the use of these queries may render databases susceptible to compromise. For instance, it may be possible to infer information about specific individuals by putting together data from a sequence of statistical queries, using prior knowledge of an individual, or through collusion among users.

An SDB is considered secure if no protected data can be inferred from available queries. "In the literature, many scenarios of compromise and inference control methods have been proposed to protect SDBs," Aydinian says. "However, to date no one security control method is capable of completely preventing compromise."

Query restriction is one of several general approaches used for security control. A "query request" retrieves a subset of data from a database that meets a set of conditions. In query restriction, the kind and amount of data that can be retrieved by such queries is limited, for example, the size of the data, or the amount of overlap between data that is returned.

In one type of query restriction method, only certain sums of individual records (called "SUM queries") that meet a minimum specified size or number, and satisfy a specified set of conditions, are available to users.

Aydinian explains with an example. "Consider a company with a large number of employees. Suppose that for each member of the company, the sex, age, rank, length of employment, salary etc. is recorded. The salaries of individual employees are confidential. Suppose that only SUM queries are allowed, i.e. the sum of the salaries of the specified people is returned. Then one might pose the query: What is the sum of salaries for males, above 50, and during the last 10 years?"

The task addressed in the paper is to provide an optimal collection of SUM queries that prevents compromise of confidential information -- such as individual salaries, for instance. A natural solution is to maximize the number of available SUM queries. The authors obtain tight bounds for the maximum number of such queries that return subsets of data without compromising groups of entries.

"Future work in the query-restriction approach includes evaluation of new security-control mechanisms, which are easy to implement and guarantee absolute security," says Aydinian. "At the same time, it is desirable that these methods satisfy other criteria like richness of available queries, consistency, cost etc. It also seems promising to develop methods combining different security control mechanisms."

AOL TV gets HuffPost makeover (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) ? AOL TV has been rebranded as HuffPost TV.

The retooled site, huffingtonpost.com/tv, launched Wednesday morning as part of editorial boss Arianna Huffington's ongoing makeover of AOL's editorial properties.

Following the model established at The Huffington Post, it will feature prominent bloggers such as Aaron Sorkin, Norman Lear, Bill Maher and Dr. Phil McGraw.

"It's going to be a sophisticated, bordering on obsessive take on the most buzzworthy shows," Michael Hogan, executive entertainment editor at Huffington Post Media Group, told TheWrap. "But I also think we're going to be looking for ways to connect what's happening on TV to the broader culture."

Hogan said that Jaimie Etkin, former associate culture editor for Newsweek and The Daily Beast, has been hired to serve as editor. AOL TV's five staffers will move to the new site.

Hogan said that HuffPost TV will retain the television listings and show pages from AOL TV -- but will have a different color. Moreover, its tone will better reflect the Huffington Post's.

"People really love to talk about TV, and they know that the Huffington Post is a place to have conversations online, so to me it's like the internet and TV were kind of made for each other," Hogan said.

"One of the primary objectives here is not just to kind of hear ourselves speak and pat ourselves on the back, but to really engage with an audience that we know is there," he said. "They're already there reading The Huffington Post and commenting on The Huffington Post, but also, we know there are all these communities around all these shows, so we want to provide the best possible venue for people to talk about the shows."

He said that people want to talk about the shows they've just watched -- and that HuffPost TV will give them a place to do that.

AOL acquired The Huffington Post for $315 million this past February. When it did, it installed Arianna Huffington as president and editor-in-chief of The Huffington Post Media Group, which includes AOL properties.
