Jenelle Evans: Actually Seeking Custody of Son?!

Teen Mom 2's Jenelle Evans is heading to court in an effort to straighten out her life (insert joke here), with priority #1 being to gain custody of her son Jace.

Just a few days after breaking up with Gary Head and deleting her Twitter account (@PBandJenelly), she's hoping for a clean slate as she meets with a judge.

Jenelle Evans wants a judge to let her off probation completely, then plans to seek custody of her Jace, currently under control of her mother Barbara.

"Jenelle is trying to straighten her life out and the first step she's taking is requesting that a judge let her out of probation," her attorney Dustin Sullivan said.

Jenelle Evans Sad

"Jenelle has actually been doing really well," Sullivan added. "She is doing everything she is supposed to do and I've seen a big improvement in her life."

After breaking up with her boyfriend because of alleged abuse, Sullivan said he encouraged Jenelle to take down her Twitter and she took his advice.

Her only goal now is to rebuild that relationship with Jace, Sullivan adds.

"Nothing has been filed but Jenelle has expressed interest in getting custody of Jace back," he said. "She would really like to have Jace back with her."

That would mark a dramatic reversal from what we've seen on Teen Mom 2, in which Jenelle fights and yells a lot but is rarely even seen with the tyke.

Sullivan said his oft-troubled 20-year-old client would be heading to court April 24 to make the request and he is hopeful that the judge will agree.

(AP) ? More than $1 billion has been spent over the past decade researching autism. In some ways, the search for its causes looks like a long-running fishing expedition, with a focus on everything from genetics to the age of the father, the weight of the mother, and how close a child lives to a freeway.

That perception may soon change. Some in the field say they are seeing the beginning of a wave of scientific reports that should strengthen some theories, jettison others and perhaps even herald new drugs.

"I do think over the next three to five years we'll be able to paint a much clearer picture of how genes and environmental factors combine" to cause autism, said Geraldine Dawson, a psychologist who is chief science officer for the advocacy group Autism Speaks.

The effort has been infused with new urgency by a recent federal report that found autism disorders are far more common than was previously understood, affecting 1 in 88 U.S. children. Better diagnosis is largely responsible for the new estimate, but health officials said there may actually be more cases of autism, too.

If autism's causes remain a mystery, "you're not going to be able to stop this increase," said Irva Hertz-Picciotto, a researcher at the University of California, Davis who is leading a closely watched study into what sparks autism disorders.

In the past week, a spate of studies released during National Autism Awareness Month has offered tantalizing new information about potential causes. Research published in the journal Nature widened the understanding of the genetic roots of some cases and confirmed the elevated risks for children with older fathers. Another study, released online Monday in Pediatrics, suggested maternal obesity may play a role.

To be sure, finding the causes of autism ? an umbrella term for a variety of disorders that delay children socially or intellectually ? remains daunting. The causes are believed to be complicated, and not necessarily the same for each child. Some liken autism to cancer ? a small word for a wide range of illnesses. In many cases, autism can be blamed on both genetic problems that load the gun and other factors that pull the trigger.

It has been a growing public concern for two decades, as studies have found it to be more and more prevalent. The U.S. government dramatically increased funding for autism research in the last decade, and now budgets about $170 million a year through the National Institutes of Health. That's only about a quarter of what NIH will spend on breast cancer research and $50 million less than what it will spend on asthma.

But more than a half-dozen foundations and autism advocacy groups have been adding to the pot, putting annual research spending in recent years at more than $300 million. About a third of that has been devoted to finding autism's causes.

The lion's share of money for finding a cause has been spent on genetics, which so far experts believe can account for roughly 20 percent of cases. The earliest success was in the early 1990s and involved the discovery of the genetic underpinnings of Fragile X syndrome, a rare condition that accounts for just 2 to 4 percent of autism cases but is the most common form of inherited intellectual disability in boys.

The focus on genetics has been bolstered by dramatic improvements in gene mapping as well as the bioengineering of mice with autism symptoms. Dozens of risk genes have been identified, and a half-dozen drug companies are said to be working on developing new treatments.

"We've made some very significant progress on the genetics end of this search," said Dr. Thomas Insel, director of the National Institute of Mental Health.

Scientists have used autistic mice to test new drugs. Among the most promising is a small, white, strawberry-flavored pill that is so experimental it doesn't have a name. Developed by a Massachusetts company called Seaside Therapeutics Inc., the drug is aimed at a problem area in the brains of autistic children, where neurons connect and conduct signals through the nervous system.

It's a bit like the way tree-hopping ants might cross the twig ends of one tree branch to another. In Fragile X syndrome, scientists have noted the branches are thinner and the twigs too numerous. The experimental drug thins the twigs and strengthens the branches, allowing a more solid and centralized bridge.

The same problem hasn't been as visible in other types of autism, but many believe the phenomenon is somewhat similar.

The drug was deemed successful in mice and is now being tested in children and adults. In small, early studies, the drug made a striking difference in small groups of Fragile X children, causing hermit-like youngsters to start hanging out in the kitchen to chat with their mothers, said Dr. Paul Wang, Seaside's vice president of clinical development.

Now it is being tried in a preliminary study of about 150 children with a range of other autism disorders, including Asperger's. The results are expected to be presented at a scientific conference in the next year.

"It's going to be an exciting time, we hope," when those results come in, said Dawson, from Autism Speaks.

But even genetics enthusiasts acknowledge that genes are only part of the answer. Studies of identical twins have shown that autism can occur in one and not the other, meaning something outside a child's DNA is triggering the disorder in many cases. Some cases may be entirely due to other causes, Dawson said.

That broad "other" category means "environmental" influences ? not necessarily chemicals, but a grab bag of outside factors that include things like the age of the father at conception and illnesses and medications the mother had while pregnant.

For years, the best-known environmental theory involved childhood vaccines, prompted by a flawed 1998 British study that has been thoroughly discredited. Dozens of later studies have found no link between vaccines and autism.

But there are other possible candidates. In all cases, these are "association" studies ? they don't prove cause and effect. They merely find connections between certain factors and autism. And sometimes these conclusions can be skewed by other things researchers failed to account for. Some study results expected within a year:

? Hertz-Picciotto's study of 1,600 children in Northern California is comparing autistic children, youngsters with other developmental disabilities, and those who have no such diagnoses. Some results have been released already, including the recent finding that suggests a link between autism and a mother's obesity. An earlier part of the study found that children born to mothers living less than two blocks from a freeway were twice as likely to have autism ? presumably because of auto exhaust and air pollution, the researchers speculated.

?A Centers for Disease Control and Prevention study involves 2,700 families nationwide. The researchers are interviewing parents and poring over medical records to look for common threads among autistic families, as well as doing genetics tests and checking hair samples for mercury. Much of the focus is on illnesses, medications, nutritional deficiencies or other problems during pregnancy.

?A study by Pennsylvania researchers involves 1,700 families in various regions of the country. Scientists are doing brain-imaging to look for changes over time in the brains of infants who have an older autistic sibling.

?A large Scandinavian study is examining patient registries in six countries for prenatal risk factors.

As study findings are reported, researchers are hoping to see repetition ? confirmation, that is ? that certain factors are playing significant roles.

Even so, scientists are still casting nets.

Said Coleen Boyle, a CDC official overseeing research into children's developmental disabilities: "We're at the infancy of just understanding how these factors relate to autism."

Do-Not-Track Tools: Hands-On Showdown

The due concept do-not-track apparatus won?t be quite robust, given it would simply make your browser send a ?please don?t lane me? ask to a website. Given a past misbehaviors of Internet behemoths such as Facebook and Google, it?s tough to put many faith in a resolution that depends on a best intentions of site owners.

Nevertheless, that?s a crux of a FTC?s interest to Internet businesses for intentional cooperation. Specifically, a group suggests that remoteness controls should be incorporated into new products and services by pattern (including that do-not-track underline in each browser, perhaps); that consumers should have elementary ways to control their personal information; and that corporate data-collection practices should be transparent.

World News - 'Like Casablanca in World War II': As Iran tensions ...

Joern Haufe / dapd via AP, file

The $350 million Flame Towers are due to be officially opened in the center of Baku, Azerbaijan, later this spring. A secular dictatorship with a long border with Iran, Azerbaijan is one of the few remaining countries than can act as a reliable listening post for America and Israel.

By Alastair Jamieson, msnbc.com

A Soviet-legacy oil nation is emerging as a hotbed of global espionage as tension escalates between Israel and Iran.

Azerbaijan, which links Russia to the Middle East, has strategic importance as a bridgehead for the West in its war of diplomacy with Tehran.

A secular dictatorship with a long border with Iran, it is one of the few remaining countries than can act as a reliable listening post for America and Israel, turning its capital, Baku, into a hotbed of intelligence activity.

?Like Casablanca in World War II, Baku is now also a center of monitoring Iranian mischief,? Ariel Cohen, senior research fellow at the Washington-based Kathryn and Shelby Cullom Davis Institute for International Studies, part of the Heritage Foundation, told msnbc.com. ?This is understandable taking into account visa-free regime of travel between the two countries and aggressive Iranian intelligence tactics.?

NYT: US defines first move in new talks with Iran

Recent events have lifted the lid on some of the international maneuvering in Baku. In March, Azeri security services arrested 22 people they say were trained by Iran to carry out terrorist attacks against the US and Israeli embassies.

In January, two accused of plotting to kill teachers at a Jewish school were also held.

'The Israelis are more subtle'
Most experts agree there are many Mossad agents?in Azerbaijan?working for Israel.

?The Iranians act in the open, they want everyone to know that they are here,? Dr. Arastun Orujl, director of the east-West Research Center in Baku told Britain's?Times newspaper. ?The Israelis are more subtle, like the Americans. But in the end everyone knows they are here, too.?

Iran lawmaker: We can produce nuclear weapons

So why does Azerbaijan matter? Not only does its geography make it an ideal place for the U.S. and its allies to face down Tehran, but its political history entangles it in the current tensions with Israel.

Millions living in northern Iran are ethnic Azeris, theoretically binding the two nations. But Azerbaijan has allied itself increasingly with Israel and the West as it uses its oil wealth to leverage its global standing.

?It was one of the first countries to back America after 9/11,? Gerald Frost, director of the Paris-based Caspian Information Centre told msnbc.com. ?It is as politically helpful to the West as its position close to the Middle East will allow. America needs to pay it close attention.?

While the country has made concessions to the West, it remains a dynastic dictatorship under the rule of Ilham Aliyev, who inherited power from father Heydar Aliyev, a former Soviet leader who reinvented himself as a nationalist during the collapse of the Soviet Union. Ilham took over in a 2003 election described by Human Rights Watch as ?fraudulent? and which it said was ?followed by protests that turned violent, plunging Azerbaijan into a human rights crisis from which it has not recovered?.

David W Cerny / Reuters

Azerbaijan's President Ilham Aliyev answers questions during a news conference in Prague, Czech Republic, on April 5.

Israel last year established a factory in Azerbaijan making parts for its military drones, and has supplied?the country?with $1.6 billion worth of military equipment.

The BBC?reported Russia President Vladimir Putin "surprised Western leaders" in 2007 by offering to let America use its radar base in Azerbaijan to defend Europe against any missile attack from Iran.

Cohen says Iran has been trying undermine Azerbaijan's secular position in the hopes of turning it from a dictatorship into a theocracy, echoing the transition of countries such as Libya and Egypt that now appear destined to be ruled by conservative Islamists.

Mark Perry, in a Foreign Policy article titled "Israel?s Secret Staging Ground", claimed Obama administration officials now believe that the security cooperation between Azerbaijan and Israel is actually "heightening the risks of an Israeli strike on Iran".

Azerbaijan has denied it?would allow the U.S. or Israel ?to launch airstrikes, although Frost noted that it could provide associated support since it already allows the U.S. military into its airspace to reach Afghanistan and to evacuate injured troops.

While ties with Israel deepen, the future relationship with the United States is less clear because Washington does not currently have an ambassador in Baku. The last holder of the post, Matthew Bryza, left last year after his appointment was not confirmed by Congress, a decision Frost believes is likely to have been influenced by America's powerful Armenian lobby.

Cultural boom
Meanwhile, its strategic importance?is being echoed in a cultural boom. Baku is enjoying a Dubai-style explosion of luxury hotels and designer fashion stores. "It is all very glitzy, very much reflecting the way Azeris want to be seen as an establish European-style country rather than a backwater," said Ben Illis, co-author of a new Time Out guide to Baku, which is due to be?published next month.

It has launched a major tourism advertising campaign, and its ambitious bid to host the 2020 Olympic games found its way onto the IOC shortlist.

This spring is expected to see the unveiling of the $350 million Flame Towers ? three glass-sided skyscrapers up to 620ft in height inspired by the country?s ancient association with fire. Human Rights Watch says ?thousands of residents? have been forcibly evicted to make way for some of these projects.

However, billing itself as?tourism destination may be a challenge for a country that still has a very poor human rights record and still is often confused with Kazakhstan, home of comic creation Borat.

An unlikely litmus test of its political ambitions will come next month when it hosts the Eurovision Song Contest, a live music competition beamed across Europe that is a byword for kitsch (it was once won by a transsexual representing Israel). Baku's bitter enemy, neighboring Armenia, pulled out of the contest in disgust when an Azeri duo won last year.

David Mdzinarishvili / Reuters, file

Eurovision Song Contest 2011 winners Eldar Gasimov (2nd left) and Nigar Jamal (2nd right), who are known as Ell-Nikki, are greeted by fans in Baku. Their victory means Baku will host this year's competition.

"This will perhaps be a good indication of how far the regime is prepared to go to further its relationship with the west," said James Nixey, of British think tank Chatham House.

US gives Afghans control in deal on night raids

Afghanistan and the United States signed a deal on special forces operations in the insurgency-wracked country on Sunday, putting Afghans in charge of controversial night raids.

Night operations by international special forces against insurgent hideouts have triggered popular anger and been a key factor fraying Washington and Kabul's relationship, with Afghan President Hamid Karzai denouncing them as reckless.

But Western military commanders stress they are extremely useful in the bloody war against Taliban insurgents, who have been fighting Karzai and his Western allies for more than a decade.

The deal, covering all special operations in Afghanistan, is expected to pave the way for a strategic partnership pact between Washington and Kabul on the US presence beyond 2014, when most of the 130,000 NATO-led troops are due to leave. It goes into effect immediately.

The text gives Kabul authority over special forces operations, creating an Operational Coordination Group of Afghan security and law enforcement personnel that "reviews and approves" such missions, including night raids.

"This is a paradigm shift in the way special operations are being conducted," said a US official involved in the negotiations. "They (the Afghans) have the initial say... they are the ones who are deciding to conduct an operation."

The document states that Afghan special operations forces will lead the missions and only Afghan forces should search private homes and compounds, although they can have "support from US forces... as required or requested."

Pentagon spokesman George Little hailed the agreement as a "major step forward," saying in a tweet that the pact "marks progress in transition process and in Afghan capabilities."

Analysts said the agreement appeared to be a good one for Kabul, but warned that it might not reduce abuses -- although it would make them less of a strain between the two allies.

At a signature ceremony in the Afghan capital, Defence Minister Abdul Rahim Wardak described it as "a fundamental step towards Afghan national sovereignty."

General John Allen, the US commander of NATO-led forces, called it the "second important milestone in less than 30 days towards Afghan sovereignty", after an agreement transferring control of detainees to Afghan authorities.

Karzai's spokesman Aimal Faizi told AFP that warrants for night raids would have to be issued by Afghan legal authorities, and Kabul would have control over captured prisoners.

In their supporting role, foreign forces could provide "intelligence sharing... air support or other modern technology," he said. "Afghans will determine whether there is a need for the foreigners to take part."

One man who said his house in Sha Wali Kot in Kandahar province, a Taliban stronghold, was raided by US forces and his brother killed some months ago welcomed the agreement.

"They tied our hands in front of our women and beat us, that was a dishonour in front of our women," said Haji Marjan, 54. "Afghans know the culture, they will coordinate their operations with people. We are happy about it."

But Kate Clark, of the Afghanistan Analysts Network, said: "It doesn't mean Afghans on the receiving end of night raids won't be on the receiving end of abuses.

"It might mean it's politically less sensitive -- it's a fact that both Afghans and foreign journalists care more when foreigners harm Afghans rather than Afghans harm Afghans," she added.

The possibility of detention without trial was written into the document, she pointed out, describing it as "very worrying."

But she said the agreement "looks like a good deal" for the Kabul government.

"The Afghan government has managed to get back some sovereignty," which was "very important" to Karzai. "The palace gets delegations of very upset people" complaining about the operations, Clark said.

Tensions between Kabul and Washington have soared this year, with incidents including the burning of Korans at a US military base and a massacre of 17 civilians, for which a US soldier has been charged.

But US officials hope the new agreement will pave the way for a strategic partnership agreement governing relations between Kabul and Washington after 2014, which they want to have signed in time for a NATO summit in May in Chicago.

US military officers envisage a follow-on force of around 15,000 personnel in Afghanistan, focusing on air power, logistics, training, intelligence and counterterrorism.

Allen told the Senate Armed Services Committee last month that 2,200 night raids were carried out last year. In 90 percent of the operations, no shots were fired and civilian casualties rarely occurred, he said.

Do We Have To Use A Realtor If She Shows The House Once ...

questions

Q: We are selling my mom?s place (she moved into assisted living) and a gal she knows wants to be the Realtor. She keeps saying she is representing us, but we have not signed anything with her and don?t really trust her. She wants to show the house to another Realtor and her client. We are not ready, but she has convinced us to let him walk through. Are we obligated to her in any way?
?Anonymous, Walnut Creek, CA

A: You need to contact a lawyer in your area. While you have not signed a contract with her, she will now be procurring cause if the other Realtor and buyer want to buy the home which will cause issues for the Realtor that you do list with (and could result in the local Real Estate Ethics Board taking the commission away from the Realtor that you list with and giving it to the Realtor that you don?t want to use).

You need to NOT show the home to anyone until you have a contract signed with a Realtor that you WANT to use

In the St Louis area, if we show a home that is not on the market (and hence you are a for sale by owner) then we have to have a SIGNED agreement with you PRIOR to showing the home stating that you have agreed to let us show it and stating whether or not you have agreed to pay a commission to us if we bring a buyer to you, but the rules there may be different. Contact the local Real Estate Board and talk to someone on their Ethics Committee.
Dale Weir is a Realtor? with Coldwell Banker Gundaker in Chesterfield, MO.

A: Unless you have signed a contract of some sort, you are not obligated to this Realtor.
Lee Dworshak is a Realtor? with Keller Williams LA Harbor Realty in Rancho Palos Verdes, CA.

A: If you do not have a signed listing agreement you are not obligated to her in any way. I would insist on being there for the showing and introducing yourself to the other real estate agent. Make sure that agent knows you do not have representation and if her client wants to purchase the home, that she needs to contact you. Hopefully the gal your mom knows is just trying to help. You can always contact her Broker if you continue to have issues.
Melanie Atkinson is a Realtor? with Coldwell Banker Residential Real Estate in Tampa, FL.

A: Since you have already decided to show it to her colleague and the client, I would sit and have a chat with her beforehand and lay out expectations in terms of sales price, commissions, etc. Most agreements have to be in writing, but some oral contracts are enforceable in some states.
Cathy Baumbusch is a Realtor? with RE/MAX Executives in Alexandria, VA.

A: f you have not signed any sort of agency contract then you are not obligated to do anything with that particular agent. If you do not trust her, I would recommend getting an agent you actually do trust and inform this one of your plans ASAP.
Good luck!
Ben Fisher is a Realtor? with Summit Sotheby?s International Realty in Park City, UT.

Coffee May be Linked to Reduced Risk of Type 2 Diabetes | The ...

By Lainey Younkin, RD

What began in the jungles of Ethiopia several hundred years ago now presents itself on every corner in both cities and suburbs.? It?s sold at Starbucks, Dunkin Donuts, Panera, and Au Bon Pain among others, and Americans rely on it to fuel their bodies and brains each day.? It?s one of the most popular nonalcoholic beverages in the world.? You guessed.? It?s coffee.

Coffee originates from coffee cherries whose seeds are roasted, creating a complex chemical composition.? Its makeup consists of over a thousand different chemicals including caffeine, chlorogenic acid, other polyphenols, carbohydrates, lipids, vitamins, minerals, nitrogenous compounds, and many others.

Coffee consumption has skyrocketed in recent years due to these ?fast coffee? chains that are ever-present.? But with coffee?s growing popularity has come growing speculations about its effect on health.? Specifically, researchers have been interested in the effect of coffee on chronic disease risk, and according to a recent German study they may be one step closer to finding a link.

The European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC)-Germany Study results showed that coffee consumption does not increase the risk of chronic disease (type 2 diabetes, myocardial infarction, stroke, and cancer) but could lower the risk of type 2 diabetes (T2D).

The EPIC-Germany Study sought to determine the effects of caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee consumption on the risk of four chronic diseases: T2D, myocardial infarction (MI), stroke, and cancer. Participants were from two cities in Germany that are part of the larger EPIC study, a multicenter prospective cohort focused on associations between diet, lifestyle, and chronic disease risk.

Previous studies yielded conflicting results surrounding coffee?s effect on chronic diseases.? Some studies suggest that drinking coffee raises the risk of many chronic diseases.? Randomized controlled trials have shown coffee consumption raises blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and homocysteine.? Other studies suggest coffee reduces the risk of chronic diseases, and still others claim there is no association.? Current dietary guidelines recommend drinking coffee in moderation, and the American Heart Association says that 1-2 cups per day does not seem to be harmful in relation to coronary heart disease.

One reason results are conflicting is because many factors must be taken into consideration when addressing this potential relationship.? Several previous studies did not differentiate between caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee.? Other studies failed to account for confounding variables such as smoking, alcohol intake, and physical activity.? Historically, smoking and coffee consumption have gone hand-in-hand, which presents the question of which is to blame for adverse health outcomes.

The EPIC-Germany Study analysis included 42,659 participants (mean age 49.7 y) recruited from 1994-1998 and followed for almost nine years.? Compared to drinking <1 cup/d of caffeinated coffee, they found that consuming >4 cups/d of caffeinated coffee was associated with a 23% lower risk of T2D.? The same amount of decaffeinated coffee (>4 cups/d) was found to be associated with a 30% lower risk of T2D.? One cup of coffee was defined as 150 mL, which is slightly more than 4 oz.

In addition, compared to drinking <1 cup/d of decaffeinated coffee, consuming >4 cups/d was positively associated with MI risk.? But, the investigators were quick to point out that this finding must be taken with caution since only 4.5% of the participants reported drinking solely decaffeinated coffee.? Also, it was likely that participants could have switched to decaffeinated coffee after diagnosis of CVD.? Therefore, the positive association could be due to the fact that participants already had an increased risk of MI from having had a previous heart attack.

All of these results were after adjustment for confounding factors including chronic disease risk, age, sex, city, alcohol intake, smoking status, BMI, and hypertension.

The researchers also found an interaction between drinking caffeinated coffee and smoking. For smokers, caffeinated coffee consumption did not decrease the risk of T2D. This is likely because the adverse effects of smoking may outweigh the potential benefits of coffee.

Prior to previous reports, the researchers found no relationship between caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee consumption and CVD risk. They believe this is due in part to previous studies not adjusting for smoking and alcohol intake.? Since this was an observational study, causality could not be determined.? The researchers also found no relationship between caffeinated or decaffeinated coffee consumption and total cancer risk.

While this study took both caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee into account, it had a few limitations.? It relied on self-reported coffee consumption, did not assess the method of preparation, and did not determine if anything was added to the coffee (sugar, milk, etc).

Clearly, more studies are needed on this hot topic.? Until further research proves otherwise, drink away, in moderation.
