Apple announces 7.9-inch iPad mini with a 1,024 x 768 display, A5 CPU and optional LTE for $329

Apple announces 79inch iPad mini with a 1,024 x 768 display, A5 CPU and optional LTE for $329

Well, hello there, the worst-kept secret in tech. Apple's iPad mini is the company's newest device, a 7.9-inch tablet that's designed to go toe-to-toe with Google's Nexus 7. For now, it'll sit alongside the iPad 2 and fourth-generation iPad, and as it packs the same 1,024 x 768 display as the second-generation slate, apps will carry across without any resizing. While Phil Schiller didn't mention Google or the Nexus 7 by name, the rival slate (and Google's app library) was compared to the newest iOS device. On stage, he claimed that the screen, which is .9-inch larger than the Nexus 7, gives the iPad mini 35 percent more display area than Google and ASUS' collaboration.

On the hardware size, the 7.2mm thick, .68 pounds device has been manufactured with an "all new" process that gives it the same anodized edges as you'll find on the iPhone 5. If you were hoping for equal specifications to the big-daddy iPad, you may be mildly disappointed. While it will pack a 5-megapixel camera and an LTE modem (if you opt to buy a cellular model), it's running the last-generation A5 CPU. However, the slower internals and less potent display may account for how the company has been able to squeeze out a claimed 10 hours of use despite the constrained space for a battery. Pre-orders for the $329, 16GB WiFi-only model begin on Friday (October 26th) and will begin shipping on November 2nd. The cellular-equipped models will begin shipping a few weeks afterward on AT&T, Verizon and Sprint, with the 16GB base model costing $459, running all the way to $659 for the 64GB unit.

Gilles to wear 'pretty much nothing' on 'DWTS'

Craig Sjodin / ABC

Gilles Marini reveals he'll be wearing next to nothing for his team freestyle dance.

By Anna Chan, TODAY

Gilles Marini is getting his wish on "Dancing With the Stars: All-Stars." Well, sort of.

Last week, he explained he wanted to put together the sexiest group of dancers for his upcoming team freestyle performance. Though his collection of dancers -- Peta Murgatroyd, Kelly Monaco, Val Chmerkovskiy, Kirstie Alley, Maksim Chmerkovskiy, Emmitt Smith and Cheryl Burke -- is certainly steamy, most of the spice may be coming from himself.

"I think it's going to be my part again (to dance without a shirt on)," the French actor told The Clicker. "I really try hard not to, but they told me, 'Dude, you have no choice. We want you in the minimum.' And when they told me what my minimum would be, it was pretty much nothing. I'm going to have the minimum amount of clothing ever. I mean, nobody ever danced that way."

Though he may be barely clad for the routine, Gilles thinks this is the perfect opportunity for the lack of wardrobe.

"The only time we're going to be able to dance with that minimum is to dance on 'Gangnam Style' because we have to replicate what the video was about," he explained. (Speaking of sexy, check out Gilles in Buitoni's Girls Like Guys Who Can Cook contest.)

As for the team the actor has put together, he couldn't be happier.?

"My dream always was to dance with Kirstie because I believe Kirstie is witty, sweet, sexy, down to earth, loves animals, entertaining, funny ... she has everything," he said. "I will be the proudest man in the room because I chose Kirstie. It's true. It would've been easier to pick Sabrina (Bryan)."

He said he knows that having Sabrina on his team would've meant "an incredible dance," but that that wasn't what he was going for with his freestyle. Instead, Gilles said he put his specific team together because he felt this particular group would be able to portray to the audience what's in his heart.?

"We're just going to entertain," Gilles said. "We're going to make people go crazy. ... We're dancing to a very funny song, and I'm so excited to show the world this. 'Gangnam Style' with Kirstie?!"

His picks and his hopes for the dance all go back to his purpose for participating in "Dancing With the Stars" again.

"I want the public to have a great time when they watch me, no matter whether I win the mirror ball or not," Gilles explained. "For me, it's very important to make people smile. ... My only wish is to make people happy when I dance and nothing else. If I win this, I can turn around, walk away and give my trophy to (my competitors). ... I'm there to make sure no matter what I do, I do it with all my heart and for people to enjoy what (pro partner) Peta and I did."

And putting together the team he chose is part of that. But it hasn't come without some confusion and criticism.

"Some people have been a little bit rough with me," he admitted about his gang, which the other group of dancers has apparently dubbed The Old Team. "'Oh, you didn't pick the best dancers.' No, no! You don't understand. I picked the people I want to be with. I pick people I love. I would've been devastated if I didn't dance with Kirstie -- devastated!"?

Do you think Gilles or Shawn Johnson will have the better team dance? Share your thoughts on our Facebook page!

Our Furry Friends in Novels | Dr. Shay West aka Dr. Shay Fabbro ...

Anyone who knows me knows I love adore obsess over my cats, Buddy and Princess. They are our four-legged fuzzy kids. Hubby and I love spoiling them rotten. They are never allowed into outer space (aka outside) unless they are safely within a shuttle craft (aka cat carrier). The biggest decision they have to make each day is whether or not to nap in a patch of sunshine, on the couch all snuggled in a blanket, or under the comforter in their own little kitty cave.

When it came time to write my books, it was kind of a no brainer for me to have some sort of lovable pet or other animal companion added in. I didn?t use cats or dogs; instead, I had one of my characters develop a close friendship with a horse and another with a figment of my imagination.

I?ve always loved horses. There?s something so primal about the relationship between man and horse that transcends time. They are intelligent, have their own personalities, and are?athletic?and gorgeous. When writing the Portals of Destiny series, I decided that someone on planet Earth needed to have a close relationship with a horse such that the two almost seemed to be one, able to escape dangerous situations, read each other?s minds. And it will break the man?s heart when he has to leave her behind?

On Astra, I had Kaelin Barlow befriend an adorable creature called an urgit she calls Moira. The urgit is pink and black and so dang cute you just want to eat her up. She, too, will have to face the agony of having to leave her beloved friend behind.

One of my favorite characters in the Harry Potter books was Hedwig :) I ?have a soft spot for animals. Although I?m not sure I?d be quite as bad as Hagrid and befriend a giant spider. Another memorable creature that stole my heart was Gratch from the Sword of Truth novels. One of the few times that I actually cried while reading a book. Gratch wasn?t the cute cuddly type of pet/friend you?d expect a hero to be attached to. Gratch is a large hairy beast with wings and normally eats people. Not usually a good combo for a man and his pet ;) But as is often the case, the fiercest predators can become the most loyal allies.

What are some of your favorite animals/pets/etc you?ve read about in a book? I?d love to hear from you!

Vindalee Smith (credit: CBS 2)

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) ?Sources tell CBS 2 that a note was found next to the body of a pregnant Brooklyn mother of four who was found stabbed to death in her apartment Saturday.

The city medical examiner?s office has ruled the death of 38-year-old Vindalee Smith?a homicide. Autopsy results were?released Sunday.

Sources told CBS 2 the computer-generated note referenced Beltway sniper Lee Boyd Malvo being let out of prison and threatening that a pregnant girl will die every week if Malvo is not freed from jail.

Malvo was sentenced to life in prison for six murders in Maryland that were part of a three-week shooting spree in the Washington area back in 2002. Malvo apologized for his role in the killings, telling a court ?I?m truly sorry, grieved and ashamed for what I?ve done.? Malvo?s partner John Allen Muhammad was sentenced to death and executed in 2009.

Smith was?found stabbed to death in her East Flatbush home one day before her wedding and just hours before a planned baby shower. She was eight months pregnant. Her unborn child did not survive.

No weapon was recovered and there was no sign of forced entry, police said. Investigators have been questioning friends and family. Her fiance, Anthony Jackman,?was also questioned and released. He is not considered a suspect.

Police said Jackman was still legally married to a woman in New Jersey, according to a report by the Associated Press.

Smith was a member of the New Dimension Church in Brooklyn and a devout Seventh-day Adventist.

Russia condemns United States for human rights record

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russia accused the United States on Monday of double standards on human rights, criticizing its failure to close Guantanamo Bay prison and its use of the death penalty while the U.S. Congress considers a law which could punish Moscow for alleged abuses.

Russia and the United States attempted to "reset" their relations when President Barack Obama entered the White House in 2009, but ties have turned decidedly cooler since Vladimir Putin declared last year he planned to return to the presidency.

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney has declared that Russia is Washington's number one geopolitical foe, while Moscow has chafed under recent U.S. allegations that it harbors human rights abusers.

Now two weeks before the U.S. presidential election, the State Duma lower parliament house held a three-hour hearing criticizing its former Cold War foe.

"The U.S. claim on the role of absolute leader in the sphere of human rights is unsustainable and is not confirmed by practical realities," Itar-Tass quoted the Foreign Ministry's human rights envoy Konstantin Dolgov as saying to lawmakers.

The Duma hearing took the form of a presentation by the Foreign Ministry recommending actions by the lawmakers.

Russia also said the United States used human rights as a pretext for meddling in the affairs of sovereign states around the world, in a veiled jibe at Washington's handling of an uprising in Libya.

"(Russian authorities) must defend against policies being carried out by the United States directed at using the concept of rights as an instrument of pressure and as a basis for intervention in the internal affairs of sovereign governments," the Foreign Ministry presentation read.

That echoed a foreign policy decree Putin signed the day he was inaugurated in May, which said Moscow would seek closer ties with the United States but would not tolerate interference in its affairs and would "counter attempts to use human rights ... as an instrument of political pressure".

In power since 2000, Putin has frequently accused the United States of meddling in the affairs of Russia and other nations.

Congress is considering a bill that would require the U.S. government to impose sanctions on people believed responsible for the death of Sergei Magnitsky, an anti-corruption lawyer who died in a Moscow jail in 2009, and other human rights violators.

Romney and some lawmakers have demanded the bill be adopted if the United States upgrades trade relations with Moscow, after Russia joined the World Trade Organization in August.

In a sign of deteriorating ties earlier this month, Russia said it would not renew a decades-old agreement with Washington aimed at dismantling nuclear and chemical weapons. Washington said the two sides were still talking over its extension.

Russia has accused the United States of trying to sway Russian elections and meddle in its domestic affairs through its U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), and it ordered the agency's Russian operations shut down this month.

Kremlin critics said the move was intended to cut funding to organizations Putin sees as a threat following his return as president after four years as prime minister, and called it part of a crackdown on dissent.

One dead, six seriously injured in Arizona bus crash

WILLOW BEACH, Ariz. (AP) ? A charter bus carrying tourists back from the Grand Canyon careened off a northwest Arizona highway late Friday night and crashed, killing the driver and injuring more than 20 passengers, six of them seriously, authorities said.

The bus was northbound on Highway 93 and nearing the Nevada state line when the driver suffered a physical problem and lost control shortly before 8 p.m., the Arizona highway patrol said.

The vehicle hit a ravine, tore up a small hill, and then bounced and lurched over rough terrain for more than 700 feet before stopping, damaging the front end but remaining upright, patrol spokesman Carrick R. Cook said.

"We believed the driver experienced some sort of the medical condition and he just went off the road," the patrol said in a statement. No other vehicles were involved.

All 48 passengers were injured, but 27 of them were walking wounded with mainly bumps and bruises, Cook said.

"The passengers were pretty much bouncing around," he said.

The six most seriously hurt were flown by helicopter to University Medical Center in Las Vegas, while 15 others passengers with less severe injuries were rushed to area hospitals by road.

UMC spokeswoman Danita Cohen said the six were being treated for nonlife-threatening injuries, such as broken bones and lacerations. She described them as being mostly over 50 years old.

Cook said most of the passengers appeared to be from Asia or Europe, but he didn't have details.

The passengers were returning to Las Vegas following a trip to the Grand Canyon when the crash occurred.

It was the third time in recent years that a tour bus crash in the area claimed lives.

A year ago, two people were killed and several others injured in a crash. In January 2009, seven people died and 10 were injured when a charter bus carrying a group of Chinese tourists on a return trip from the Grand Canyon crashed on U.S. 93, the main highway leading to Hoover Dam.

Four hours after the crash, the bus was sitting upright about 30 feet off the shoulder of the road.

The highway near the crash site was reduced to one lane of traffic for several hours.

Murdoch eyes LA Times, Chicago Tribune

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - News Corp Chairman and CEO Rupert Murdoch is looking to buy the Los Angeles Times, one of the country's largest newspapers, from struggling media conglomerate Tribune Co, a source familiar with his plans told Reuters on Friday.

News Corp executives -- including Murdoch's son James -- flew into Los Angeles twice this month to take a preliminary look at the storied daily's books, said the source, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the meetings were not publicized.

Rupert Murdoch is also eyeing the Chicago Tribune, whose publisher Tribune Co is now trying to exit bankruptcy. News Corp executives are in early talks with Tribune Co debtholders, including hedge fund Oaktree Capital. The company wants to secure footholds in Los Angeles and Chicago, according to the Los Angeles Times, which first reported the news.

Murdoch has long eyed the LA Times, the newspaper reported. Oaktree declined to comment, while News Corp did not respond immediately to requests for comment.

Wall Street has speculated that the company will take to the acquisition trail after its split into two businesses, one for entertainment and the other for publishing, to bulk up its holdings in a newspaper industry ravaged by advertising revenue losses and declining readership.

But any attempt by the media mogul to go after the two newspapers may run foul of regulatory hurdles.

Murdoch controls the Wall Street Journal -- which vies with USA Today for the mantle of the largest-circulation U.S. newspaper -- and the New York Post. News Corp last year was embroiled in a major scandal over phone hacking that eventually prompted it to close its British News of the World tabloid.

Also, Federal Communications Commission rules prevent ownership of a newspaper and TV station in the same market. News Corp now owns two Fox stations in LA, and two in Chicago, the newspaper reported.

The commission however has considered eliminating the rule and has granted exceptions in the past, including a waiver that allowed the Tribune to operate both KTLA-TV Channel 5 and the Los Angeles Times, the LA Times reported.

Murdoch also might face competition from well-known local figures. Other potential bidders include former venture capitalist and ex-LA deputy mayor Austin Beutner, Orange County Register owner Aaron Kushnere, and San Diego real estate mogul Doug Manchester, the newspaper said.

The Tribune Co, which owns 23 TV stations in addition to newspapers, filed for bankruptcy four years ago. Its other newspapers include the Baltimore Sun in Maryland, the Orlando Sentinel and Sun Sentinel in Florida, and the Hartford Courant in Connecticut.

In 2007, real estate mogul Sam Zell acquired Tribune through a leveraged buyout that saddled the company with $13 billion in debt just as the newspaper industry was hit by a severe drop in advertising revenue.

The company filed for bankruptcy a year later and has been mired in court while its creditors have fought over competing exit plans ever since.

Since 2007, newspaper advertising revenue for the industry has dropped almost 50 percent to $24 billion, according to the Newspaper Association of America.

No cost MULTILEVEL MARKETING Ideas Part 1 Internet marketing

There?s nothing worse than getting to the end of the month and discovering that you?ve spent more money on your MLM than you?ve actually made. That?s why it?s extremely essential that you learn some free MLM marketing strategies before you spend yourself out associated with business. MLM is an ever-changing industry and thanks to the internet, there is more free of charge MLM marketing strategies than ever before.

In Part 1 of the article, I want to share with you the best free MLM marketing strategies which you can use to build your business online. Let?s get started?

Free MLM Marketing Strategies For Internet marketing

One of the most popular free MLM marketing strategies needs to be BLOGGING. Owning your own blog allows you to do, say and write whatever you want, without anybody restricting your content. A blog is basically the ?HUB? or ?nerve centre? of the business and is a place where you can promote your business, affiliate products, videos, articles and anything else that you do online.

The best thing about blogs is that people trust them much more than they trust advertisements simply because they have more of the ?word of mouth? kind of appeal. Blogs also give you a chance to promote YOU. This is a business where people join people, not companies or items, so it?s extremely essential that you brand yourself as a person of knowledge and value. A blog will permit you to do just that.

The best platform with regard to blogging is WordPress and when you purchase your domain name (about $12 annually) and hosting (about $5 per month), blogging is practically free.

The next best free MLM marketing strategies are VIDEO and Article promotion. For video marketing, you need little greater than a topic and a video camera (you can also use a webcam, digital camera that includes a record function or even a camera phone if that?s all you?ve got). All you have to do is make a brief recording of yourself speaking on a certain topic (Example: your business, marketing strategies, tips, tutorials or trainings, products you promote, etc) and at the end, direct people back towards the applicable website (either your blog, company site, capture page or what have you). Now all there?s left to complete is upload your video to YouTube and various other videos sites around the internet.

Article marketing is basically the same concept, except you?re creating articles rather than videos and submitting these phones article directories instead of video sites.

Now I want to talk about one of the most popular things in free MLM marketing, SOCIAL MEDIA. Sites like Facebook, MySpace and Twitter have completely changed the planet and the way we communicate with each other. They have also changed the way we can build an MLM online businesses.

If you acknowledge the fact that there are over six hundred MILLION active users upon Facebook alone, you will realise that marketing your company on social networking sites is certainly beneficial to your company.

With this amount of traffic, it is very easy to source people as potential prospects for your business. What you have to remember though, is that network marketing is all about building relationships and assisting people. This means that ?spamming? your own opportunity on yours along with other peoples walls is a big ?no-no?. Instead, try easing it in to the conversation naturally.

Here?s a good strategy that you can use on Facebook immediately. Try finding a few individuals who you know but have not spoken to in a little while. ?Add? them as a friend and start a conversation with them. Try saying something like, ?Hey first name. Long time no observe, how have you already been?

This will lead to them telling you how they are and usually asking you how you are going, to which you can reply, ?Not much, just making money and travelling the world? (or even something along those lines but only when it?s true), then change the topic immediately. This kind of remark will drive them insane with curiosity and since you just moved on as well as didn?t really say anything else, they will find it hard to not ask what you?re performing. You now have an open to share your opportunity together and potentially have an old friend examining your business. It can?t get any easier than that.

The Psychology of Waiting: 8 Factors that Make the Wait Seem ...

The Psychology of Waiting in Lines: 8 Reasons That the Wait Seems LongI?m a very impatient person, and standing in a slow-moving line drives me crazy. So, I set out to understand the psychology behind my frustration.

In my quest, I happened to read a paper by David Maister, The Psychology of Waiting Lines (PDF). The piece is aimed at people who operate stores, restaurants, doctors? offices, and other places where people fuss about being kept waiting.

Of course, most of us are the ones standing in line, not the ones controlling the line. But I was fascinated by the insight this paper provided into my own psychology of waiting.

Maister?s main point is that the actual time we?re waiting may have little to do with how long the wait feels.

Here?s a list of eight factors that make waits seem longer.

1. Unoccupied time feels longer than occupied time.

When you have something to distract yourself, time passes more quickly. Some hotels put mirrors by the elevators, because people like to look at themselves.

2. People want to get started.

This is why restaurants give you a menu while you wait, and why the orthodontist puts my daughter in the examination room twenty-five minutes before her exam actually begins.

3. Anxiety makes waits seem longer.

If you think you?ve chosen the slowest line at the drugstore, or you?re worried about getting a seat on the plane, the wait will seem longer.

4. Uncertain waits are longer than known, finite waits.

People wait more calmly when they?re told, ?The doctor will see you in thirty minutes? than when they?re told, ?The doctor will see you soon.? Maister gives an amusing illustration of a phenomenon that I?d noticed in my own life: if I arrive someplace thirty minutes early, I wait with perfect patience, but three minutes after my appointment time passes, I start to feel annoyed. ?Just how long am I going to have to wait?? I think.

5. Unexplained waits are longer than explained waits.

We wait more patiently for the pizza guy when there?s a thunderstorm than when the sky is clear.

6. Unfair waits are longer than equitable waits.

People want their waits to be fair. I get anxious, for instance, when I?m waiting on a crowded subway platform, when there?s no clear, fair way to determine who gets on the next car. The ?FIFO? rule (first in, first out) is a great rule, when it works. But sometimes certain people need attention more urgently, or certain people are more valuable customers. Then it gets trickier. Often, when people are treated out of sequence, it?s helpful to have them be served elsewhere ? e.g., people giving customer service by phone shouldn?t be in the same room as people giving service in person.

7. The more valuable the service, the longer the customer will wait.

You?ll wait longer to talk to a doctor than to talk to a sales clerk. You?ll stand in line longer to buy an iPad than to buy a toothbrush.

8. Solo waits feel longer than group waits.

The more people engage with each other, the less they notice the wait time. In fact, in some situations, waiting in line is part of the experience. During my book signings, I?ve been very gratified to have people tell me, ?I had so much fun talking to the people in line!?

Since I?ve read this paper, I?ve been far more patient about standing in line. I?m occupied (see #1) with thoughts analyzing my own experience of waiting in line!? Also, it may not always be good for us to be able to distract ourselves with our cell phones, but it sure makes the DMV easier.

?Have you found any good ways to make waiting in line more pleasant?

Jobless rate falls in most battleground states

(AP) ? Unemployment rates fell last month in nearly all of the battleground states that will determine the presidential winner, giving President Barack Obama fresh fodder to argue that voters should stick with him in an election focused squarely on the economy.

The declines, however, were modest. It's unknown whether they will do much to sway undecided voters who are considering whether to back Republican Mitt Romney or give the Democratic president four more years.

The statewide data released by the Labor Department on Friday provide one of the last comprehensive looks at the health of the U.S. economy ahead of Election Day, now a little more than two weeks away. Voters will get one more update on the national unemployment rate just days before the election. But the state reports matter greatly to the Obama and Romney campaigns, which believe the public's impressions of the economy are shaped mostly by local conditions rather than national ones.

In Ohio, perhaps the most crucial battleground state for both Obama and Romney, the unemployment rate ticked down last month to 7 percent from 7.2 percent, below the national average of 7.8 percent.

"I knew a lot of people who were laid off and now they're working," said firefighter Matt Sparling, an Obama supporter from Parma Heights, Ohio. "So something good is happening here."

Obama's team is banking on the president getting credit for improvements in Ohio's economy, particularly for the bailout of the auto industry, which has deep roots in the Midwestern swing state. But Romney has opportunities to run on the economy in Ohio, too. The state actually lost nearly 13,000 jobs in September and the drop in the unemployment rate was probably due in part to people dropping out of the job market.

Obama's campaign released a new ad in Ohio on Friday, touting the president's rescue of General Motors and Chrysler. Without the auto bailout, one man in the ad says, "Ohio would have collapsed." Another man says, "Mitt Romney would have just let us go under ? just let them go bankrupt." The ad's tagline shows the map of Ohio with the words: "Mitt Romney. Not one of us."

The president didn't mention the state jobless numbers during a campaign stop Friday in Virginia, one of two battleground states where the rate didn't drop. It held steady at the relatively low level of 5.9 percent.

Spirited on other topics, Obama quipped in a raucous rally at George Mason University that a case of "Romnesia" was preventing his opponent from remembering his own stances on health care, energy and a slate of policies.

"He's forgetting what his own positions are ? and he's betting that you will, too," Obama said. "We've got to name this condition that he's going through. I think it's called Romnesia."

Romney and running mate Paul Ryan headlined a rally in Daytona Beach, Fla., where a raucous crowd of thousands cheered their accusation that Obama is running a small campaign with no second-term agenda.

"They've been reduced to petty attacks and silly word games," Romney said, saying his opponent keeps talking about "smaller and smaller things."

Romney's rally was capped with fireworks; many were in town for the annual Biketoberfest, an annual gathering of motorcycle riders, and several people in the crowd left after they became ill at the rally.

The candidates were stepping off the campaign trail this weekend for debate preparations ahead of Monday's third and final face-off in Boca Raton, Fla. Romney was staying in South Florida to practice, while Obama and top aides headed to Camp David, the presidential retreat in Maryland, to prepare for the foreign policy-focused debate.

Obama's campaign reported that it had $99.3 million in the bank through the end of September and collected $126 million during the month. Obama had previously announced that his campaign, the Democratic National Committee and other funds had hauled in $181 million during September.

International issues competed with the economy for voters' attention Friday, as fresh questions arose over what the White House knew when about the deadly attack on Americans in Libya.

In an interview, Ryan accused Obama of stonewalling, telling Milwaukee radio station WTMJ that the president was refusing to answer even basic questions.

"His response has been inconsistent, it's been misleading," Ryan said.

Romney and Ryan have criticized the administration for saying at first that the attack was a spontaneous mob reaction to an anti-Muslim video on YouTube when they now acknowledge it was a terrorist attack. U.S. officials told The Associated Press that the CIA station chief in Libya reported to Washington within 24 hours of the attack to say there was evidence it was carried out by militants, although it's unclear who received that information right away.

Despite increased focus on Libya, the economy remains the No. 1 election issue for most voters.

Friday's jobs report showed the unemployment rate falling slightly in seven battleground states: Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Nevada, North Carolina, Ohio and Wisconsin. Rates held steady at 5.7 percent in New Hampshire and 5.9 percent in Virginia. Unemployment in both states has long been well below the national average.

Nevada's 11.8 percent rate is the highest nationally. Iowa has the lowest battleground state rate, with 5.2 percent out of work.

Obama has staked his re-election prospects on the notion that the economic crisis he inherited is easing. He's been backed by positive trends for a handful of recent economic indicators, as well as polls showing the public's view of the economy is improving.

But millions of Americans are still out of work, giving Romney an opportunity to cast the president as ineffective in solving the country's economic troubles. Romney, too, has plenty of economic data to back up his argument, including disappointing earnings reports Friday from major companies, including Microsoft and McDonald's.

Both campaigns say the last round of data released ahead of Election Day is unlikely to sway voters who have been living the reality of the economic downturn and weak recovery for more than four years.

John Patterson, 25, a recent college graduate from North Carolina, said he doesn't have to look at unemployment numbers to know things aren't good in his home state. He's sent out resumes and had a few interviews but is still unemployed.

Patterson voted for Obama four years ago, but says he's not sure he'll do the same this time around.

"Things haven't really changed, have they?" he said. "I mean, too many people are still out of work."

Back in Ohio, Diana Huddleston said the falling unemployment rate has done little to help her personal economic situation. Her husband lost his jobs a few years back when an aluminum producer in the region cut back. He eventually found work as a dishwasher, Huddleston said, but that position comes with much lower pay.

Huddleston says she doesn't plan to vote in the presidential election because "nothing is going to change here."

Museum explores the rise and fall of Prohibition

9 hrs.

Fans who have not gotten their fill of flappers, bootleggers and roaring '20s glitz and glamour from recent TV shows and movies like HBO?s ?Boardwalk Empire? and ?Lawless? can delve a little deeper into the Prohibition era at a new exhibit at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia.

At "American Spirits: The Rise and Fall of Prohibition," which opens on Friday, visitors can find out about real-life legends like Al Capone, learn to dance the Charleston at a recreated speakeasy, join gangsters in a mock criminal lineup for a photo opportunity and play the role of a federal agent tracking down rumrunners from the seat of a speedboat in a custom video game.

Related: Homes where mobsters hid out

The exhibit was about three years in the making, said Stephanie Reyer, vice president of exhibitions for the Center.??We knew this was a good story,? she said. ?It captures the imagination of the American people,??covering everything from social change and popular culture, including music and clothing of the period, to important lessons in history about the temperance movement and how government works.

The 18th Amendment, which imposed the federal prohibition of alcohol, ?is essentially the only amendment ever passed that limited personal freedom,? aside from the 13th, which limited slave ownership, Reyer said.??And it?s the only amendment ever to be repealed.?

Prohibition was the period from 1920 to 1933 when there was a federal law forbidding?the making or selling of alcoholic beverages.

Daniel Okrent?the show?s curator and author of ?Last Call: The Rise and Fall of Prohibition,? the book that inspired ?American Spirits??said the exhibition highlights the impact of the American political process , which has affected everything from personal habits to tax policies, and also helps shed light on lesser-known luminaries of the era.

Wayne Wheeler, an attorney for the Anti-Saloon League?a lobbying organization?for Prohibition?used his political skill to influence the government. He was the Karl Rove of his day, ?the political genius that made it happen,? Okrent said.?And Mabel Walker Willebrandt, who served as assistant attorney general for eight years during Prohibition, ?was the best known woman in America at the time,? Okrent said, apart from actresses and singers. ?Now,? he said, ?nobody knows her.?

Displays will show why and how laws differ from state to state and how the idea of drinking responsibly has evolved since the 1930s. Some exhibits debunk myths, Reyer said, like one that allows visitors to sit in a?recreated pew from an early 1900s church to take a quiz to find out if they would have been ?wet? or ?dry? sympathizers. She said?people are often surprised to learn that many women during Prohibition would have voted ?dry,? as the suffrage movement?which worked to gain women's right to vote?was aligned with the temperance movement.

The exhibit will feature more than 120 rare artifacts, including: temperance propaganda; original ratification copies of the 18th and 21st Amendments; authentic barware; original home manufacturing items used for making moonshine, homebrewed beer and other liquor; the hatchet used by Carry Nation, a colorful member of the temperance movement, during a barroom-smashing raid; and the phone used by Roy Olmstead,?the defendant in a landmark wiretapping case,?to run his bootlegging empire.

?They are real-life artifacts that really draw you in and put you in the time period,? said Reyer. ?We've tried to make it playful, engaging and fun, [and] as accessible as possible. Every surface is a learning opportunity.?

Admission is $17.50 for adults, $16 for seniors and students, and $11 for children ages 4-12. The exhibit will run through April 28, 2013, after which it will tour a number of U.S. cities.

But stepping back in time does not end at the center?s exit.

Several bars and taverns that operated during the prohibition are in business today in the Philadelphia area, like the still family-owned McNally's Tavern?where a citation from a 1920s enforcement raid hangs by the door?and the Cherry Street Tavern that replaced its bar with a barber's chair during Prohibition.??But patrons were able to get more than a shave and a haircut,? according to The Greater Philadelphia Tourism Marketing Corporation, which lists Prohibition-era related activities on its website.

Visitors to the Eastern State Penitentiary can see Al Capone?s cell (complete with lavish paintings, polished desk and a high-end cabinet radio receiver), or stop by Betty's Speakeasy, a storefront and caf? where local beers and spirits are tucked into ?Bootleggers? cupcakes.

Dolphins can remain alert for up to 15 days at a time with no sign of fatigue

ScienceDaily (Oct. 17, 2012) ? Dolphins sleep with only one half of their brains at a time, and according to new research published Oct. 17 in the open access journal PLOS ONE, this trait allows them to stay constantly alert for at least 15 days in a row. Brian Branstetter from the National Marine Mammal Foundation and colleagues found that dolphins can use echolocation with near-perfect accuracy continuously for up to 15 days, identifying targets and monitoring their environment.

The researchers studied 2 dolphins, one male and one female, and found that they were capable of this task with no signs of fatigue for 5 days. The female dolphin performed additional tasks for a 15-day period. How much longer they could have continued was not studied.

Sleeping with only one half of the brain at a time, or unihemispheric sleep, was believed to have evolved in dolphins to enable them to breathe at the surface of water even when half-asleep. This new research suggests that the need to remain vigilant may also have played a role in the evolution of this sleeping behavior.

"These majestic beasts are true unwavering sentinels of the sea. The demands of ocean life on air breathing dolphins have led to incredible capabilities, one of which is the ability to continuously, perhaps indefinitely, maintain vigilant behavior through echolocation" says Branstetter.

Children with ADHD find medication frees them to choose between right and wrong, study suggests

ScienceDaily (Oct. 16, 2012) ? Children living with ADHD tend to feel they benefit from medication to treat the condition and do not think the medication turns them into 'robots', according to a report published October 17. In fact, they report that medication helps them to control their behaviour and make better decisions. The study, which gives a voice to the children themselves, provides valuable insights into their experiences and the stigma they face.

The ADHD VOICES -- Voices on Identity, Childhood, Ethics and Stimulants -- study has worked with 151 families in the UK and the USA to examine ethical and societal issues surrounding attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), particularly the use of treatments such as methylphenidate (Ritalin). The project has been led by biomedical ethicist Dr Ilina Singh from King's College London and was funded by the Wellcome Trust.

Dr Singh and colleagues interviewed children and their families about ADHD, behaviour, medication and identity across four contexts: home, school, the doctor's office and peer groups.

The report is intended not only to highlight ethical and social issues surrounding ADHD but also to help families, doctors, teachers and the children themselves to understand from a child's perspective what it is like to live with ADHD.

"ADHD is a very emotive subject, which inspires passionate debate. Everyone seems to have an opinion about the condition, what causes it, and how to deal with children with ADHD, but the voices of these children are rarely listened to," explains Dr Singh. "Who better to tell us what ADHD is like and how medication affects them than the children themselves?"

Dr Singh points out the controversies that surround providing medication to children with ADHD, which some people argue turns the children into 'robots'. She believes that in many cases and with a correct diagnosis, treatment using stimulants is appropriate and beneficial, particularly if it is complemented by other interventions. The evidence from the children she interviewed suggests that they think medication improves their ability to make their own moral choices.

Glenn (age 10), from the USA, says: "If you're driving in a car, and there's two different ways, and you usually always go this way?and then one day you want to go the other way, but?the ADHD acts as a blocker, so you can't.

"[The medicine] opens the blocker so that you can go [the right] way. But you still have the choice of going the wrong way? It's harder [without medication], that's what's the truth. But it's not like [on medication] you're a robot."

Dr Singh also found that children often did not understand their condition or why they were receiving medication, and many children in the study reported that they had little meaningful contact with their doctors. After the initial evaluation, clinic visits tended to focus on side-effect checks, during which children were weighed and measured. Most children were not asked any questions during these visits.

Roger (age 13), from the UK, says: "I've only just started going to the ADHD clinic, but I haven't actually been to it properly. I've seen the doctor and he's talked about [ADHD] and I get weighed. But...they'll just say parts of what it is but then they'll stop, so they will only say some of it and then change the subject."

Dr Singh argues that children need to be better informed and able to discuss their condition. "Given the ethical concerns that arise from ADHD diagnosis and stimulant drug treatment, it is imperative that children are able to openly discuss the value of diagnosis and different treatments with a trusted professional."

The report concludes with a series of recommendations for how parents, doctors and teachers can help children cope with and better understand the condition, and begin to tackle the stigma that currently exists around it.

Professor Peter Hill, a child and adolescent psychiatrist, says: "We hope that the VOICES Study and the ADHD and Me animations will inspire people to think differently about ADHD, drug treatments and children with behavioural difficulties.

"Behaving differently around these children is the main challenge. We hope that the strategies we have outlined will help improve the interactions with these children and help improve their lives."

Clare Matterson, Director of Medical Humanities and Engagement at the Wellcome Trust, comments: "It is refreshing to hear the voices of children included in the debate about ADHD.

"It is a very emotive subject and despite the fact that these children are at the centre of this debate, they are too often ignored. This report sends a clear message to doctors, teachers and parents about the importance of talking to children about their condition -- and more importantly, listening to what they have to say."

Summary: A Dutch filmmaker records the lives of three families, including one he stayed with as an exchange student. In one household, the dad works and the mom stays at home with their kids; in another, a gay couple experiences first-time fatherhood with the Vietnamese child they just adopted; and in the third home a 60-year old man becomes an instant father when he marries a thirtysomething Latina mother. Shot documentary-style. Modern Family won six Emmy Awards, including the one for Outstanding Comedy Series. It also brought home a Peabody Award, Writers Guild Award, Directors Guilds Award and Television Critics Award.
Modern Family Season 4 Episode 4 Summary: Luke wants to quit magic and Phil just can?t seem to accept it. Meanwhile, one of Gloria?s new pregnancy symptoms is snoring and she?s keeping the whole house awake, forcing Jay to take desperate measures; and Mitch and Cam?s household dynamic is put to the test when they decide to swap duties ? Mitch staying at home with Lily while Cam goes off to work at his new job as the music teacher at Luke and Manny?s school.

Schooled? is the first, and funniest, of the two episodes tonight, as Lily (Aubrey Anderson-Emmons) gets her hair pulled by a boy on her first day of kindergarten, and Cam (Eric Stonestreet) overreacts by picking up the boy, pressing him up against the swing set, and giving him a very stern warning about touching his daughter. This leads to the boy?s parents, a lesbian couple, being called in to meet with Cam and Mitchell (Jesse Tyler Ferguson). In the episode?s best sight gag, Cam and Mitchell explain (to the camera) why gay men and gay women don?t get along, by making a Venn diagram with their arms. It?s a better bit than I can do justice by describing, but it works.

The pre-school story continued hysterically Cam and Mitch explaining why gay men don?t mix with gay women. The child who harmed Lily?s parents turned out to be lesbians. The scene in the house was pretty hysterical as the two couple did their best to get along. As the kids went missing, Cam hilariously stated how the two couples learned to get along with the half of the lesbian couple he wasn?t getting along with.

Lily?s first day in kindergarten is marred by a hair-pulling boy. Cam gets mama-bear syndrome and picks the boy up to verbally reprimand him. To the principal?s office they go ? to meet the boy?s lesbian parents. The two sets of parents don?t get along ? it?s physics: gay men and gay women don?t get along (Mitchell and Cam provided a demonstration to illustrate the reasons). The principal demands the two sets of parents agree to a playdate.

The plot thread even had an emotional beat towards the end when Haley calls her parents during their drive home upon realizing just how little she fits in on the first day, and the scene really punctuated the madcap nature of the scenes that preceded it. Learning to let go is a universal theme, even if saying goodbye at college move-in day isn?t a universal experience.

This episode was a hoot! I truly loved the touching moments with laughs along the way. My farewell sendoff to college did not contain any tears ? did yours? Did you enjoy Haley?s goodbye to Luke and Alex? Did this episode make you feel old? Was Jay/Gloria a little obnoxious in class? Are you going to preorder ?Phil?s-osopy?? ?Modern Family? does what they do best when they have their characters acknowledge flaws and embrace them in their own individual ways, and those moments read more realistic than having a character make a big, bold choice or have some huge revelation every week. The show takes baby-steps, and that pun was intentional.

Time for Great Shakeout earthquake drill

Most people create their own earthquake hazards.

When a quake hits, the first instinct for many is to run outdoors or huddle in a doorway. But as hundreds of YouTube videos prove, powerful earthquakes send furniture and glass flying and fracture buildings, raining down debris.

Instead, experts say the safest place during a big earthquake is under a desk or table, where you can drop, cover and hold on.

"If you think back to big earthquakes around the world, the people who survived were those who were underneath something that protected them from debris falling down on them," said Steve Walter, a seismologist with the U.S. Geological Survey in Menlo Park, Calif. On Thursday, more than 9 million California residents plan to practice dropping and covering at 10:18 a.m. PDT, during the Great American Shakeout.

Golden State Shakeout
In all, more than 14 million people are expected to participate in the 60-second exercise, including along the Pacific coast of Alaska and British Columbia. This year marks the first time the Shakeout will be observed in parts of the eastern United States (where people also will drop and cover at 10:18 local time ? a time of day picked to coincide with the date).

"This provides a once-a-year reminder that we live in areas that can be strongly shaken at any time," Walter told OurAmazingPlanet.

The event aims to raise awareness among residents with little firsthand experience of powerful quakes, and to correct misperceptions about what to do when the ground trembles.

Leading up to the Shakeout, local, state and federal agencies will practice responding to a magnitude 7.6 shaker on the San Andreas Fault today, the anniversary of the 1989 Loma Prieta quake, which killed dozens of people in the San Francisco area.

People underestimate the power of earthquakes, Shakeout organizers say. While earthquake intensity depends on myriad conditions, even a relatively small event of magnitude 6.3 can produce waves more powerful than the force of gravity. The waves can knock you off your feet and make it impossible to walk. The intense back-and-forth motions will cause the floor or the ground to jerk sideways out from under you, and every unsecured object could topple or become airborne. [Video ? Don't underestimate quake's power
But California's stringent building codes mean offices and homes are unlikely to collapse during a quake, said Cindy Pridmore, an engineering geologist with the California Geological Survey in Sacramento. That's why experts advise residents to stay in place and find cover there. Most quake-related injuries come from flying TVs, falling fridges, stepping in broken glass, and tripping and twisting or breaking bones, Pridmore told OurAmazingPlanet.

And contrary to what many have been told, those building codes also mean doorframes are no stronger than the rest of the building. In a doorframe, you're more likely to be slammed by swinging doors.

"A doorframe has no structural integrity, and it could even be a weak spot," said Pridmore, who remembers her mother yelling at her to get in a doorway during the 1971 Sylmar quake in Southern California.

"Protect your head and neck. It's been proven statistically to be the best thing to do, and it's the easiest," Pridmore said. [Natural Disasters: Top 10 US Threats]

If it's night, stay in bed unless something heavy could fall on you. (And if you live in earthquake country, the Shakeout is a good reminder to evaluate your living space. Move anything that's heavy enough to crush you in bed.)

Another reason to stay inside: falling brick and glass. Pridmore cites online videos showing panicked shoppers trying to escape a grocery store through its sole exit, exposing them to falling brick and shattering glass.

"People should not panic in a building. Drop, cover and protect your neck and spine, and wait until the shaking stops," Pridmore said. If outdoors, move as far away as possible from buildings, trees and power lines.

The Great American Shakeout began in 2008, following the centennial of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake.

"When you realize that maybe 10 percent of people in the area have made any preparation at all, it just seems like the right thing to encourage them to think about it on an annual basis," said Walter, who uses the Shakeout as a reminder to restock his emergency food and water supplies and donate the old stash to a local food bank. "Every year, if people do a little more or do an additional step of preparation, we'll be that much better to withstand the next big earthquake here in the Bay Area."

West Coast risk
California coastal areas and inland along the San Andreas Fault are at risk of powerful shaking. Many faults are overdue for a quake. But even the Golden State's inland valleys aren't immune. Sacramento, the state capital, could still feel the effects of a major quake, Pridmore said. Sacramento is the same distance from the Hayward Fault as San Francisco was from the center of the Loma Prieta quake, she said.

The California Geological Survey publishes a seismic shaking hazard map for California.

Farther north, Oregon and Washington state potentially face the same one-two punch as Japan's devastating earthquake and tsunami.

To sign up for the Shakeout, visit here. And remember these steps:

DROP down onto your hands and knees (before the earthquake knocks you down). This position protects you from falling while allowing you to ?move if necessary.

COVER your head and neck (and the rest of your body if possible) under a sturdy table or desk. If there is no such shelter nearby, only then should you get down near an interior wall (or next to low-lying furniture that won't fall on you) and cover your head and neck with your arms and hands.

HOLD ON to your shelter (or to your head and neck) until the shaking stops. Be prepared to move with your shelter if it is shifted around by the shaking.
