Samsung gets a boost with USPTO's 'final' rejection of Apple's pinch-to-zoom patent

The United States Patent and Trademark Office has issued a "final" rejection of Apple's pinch-to-zoom patent, opening the door for chief rival Samsung to push back even more against its loss in last summer's $1.05 billion patent infringement verdict.

Early Sunday morning, Samsung filed notice with U.S. courts of the USPTO's decision to reject all of the claims of U.S. Patent No. 7,844,915, according to FOSS Patents. The ruling rejects claims 1 through 21 of Apple's filing, but holds that they are all subject to reexamination.

The final office action found that Apple's claims in the patent were both anticipated by prior art references and obvious according to the combination of another two other prior art references.

The USPTO had issued a tentative invalidation of Apple's patent back in December, calling into question just how much of Apple's $1.05 billion victory over Samsung could remain intact. The pinch-to-zoom patent, according to Apple's own damages claims, was the most valuable software patent at issue in that case. Foss' Florian Mueller notes that the patents Apple has put forward in its second patent action against Samsung are "on average, considerably more valuable than the ones asserted in the first case."

The pinch-to-zoom patent isn't the only one of Apple's filings to see eventual rejection from the USPTO. In October, the agency invalidated the rubber-banding patent, stating that a number of its claims were anticipated or obvious due to prior art.

The finality of the USPTO's "final" action on the patent is open to interpretation. Apple now has two months to argue the validity of its patent before the invalidation goes into effect. Even following that, there is an appeals process that could see the legal and regulatory action over pinch-to-zoom stretching into mid-2017 or beyond, according to some observers.

In October of last year, a Dutch court found that Samsung had not infringed Apple's pinch-to-zoom patent. Apple has also unsuccessfully asserted that patent in Britain against HTC, as well as in Germany against Samsung and Motorola.

Magical Blogorail Green: Shopping in the Magic Kingdom

Welcome to the first stop aboard Magical Blogorail Green. Enjoy the ride as we discuss shopping in the Disney parks.

I've shared with you many times before how Main Street USA is my favorite area of the Magic Kingdom. ?One of the reasons it's my favorite is for the shopping options! ?I truly believe you can find something on Main Street for every person on your "I have to buy a souvenir for..." list!

A few of my favorite Main Street shopping experiences are:
    • Box Office Gifts- Here you can find Disney Pins & Vinylmation, Gifts & Housewares.
    • The Chapeau- Everyone who makes their first trip to WDW needs to stop by this shop to pick up their embroidered Mickey Ears!
    • Crystal Arts- This is where you can find that special gift for friends who don't want a traditional stuffed Mickey, but a glass sculpture Mickey. ?You can also watch a glass blower inside the shop.
    • Emporium- We spend most of our time here looking at and buying toys, gifts, collectibles, clothes, pins, and stuffed animals! ?We could spend hours in this shop. ?It's also a great place to be to wait out the rain.
    • Uptown Jewelers- This is another shop for "nicer" gifts such as art, collectibles, jewelry, china, clocks and Disney figurines.?
    • Main Street Confectionary- When our family isn't in the Emporium, you'll find us picking out our favorite foods, snacks, drinks and housewares gifts here. ?I make at least one trip to the Confectionary each trip!

Other great places around the Magic Kingdom for shopping include:

    • Ye Olde Christmas Shoppe in Liberty Square. ?Yes, I buy a Christmas ornament from this shop on each trip.
    • Plaza del Sol Caribe Bazaar at the exit of Pirates of the Caribbean. ?This is where my son could spend the afternoon trying on all the Pirate attire. ?You can also experience The Pirate's League here.
    • Buzz's Star Command in Tomorrowland at the exit of Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin. ?We like this shop because we love Buzz and Toy Story. ?Plus, we like to crawl in "jail" with Zurg and get a photo! ?
    • Tomorrowland Light and Power Company at the exit of Space Mountain. ?We enjoy shopping and playing the arcade here!
    • Heritage House in Liberty Square beside The Hall of Presidents. ?My husband is a history nerd, so this is the perfect spot for him! ?He loves looking at all the history books about our country and presidents.
    • Big Top Souvenirs in the new Fantasyland?is the one shopping experience I'm most looking forward to on our next trip. ?It was not quite opened on our last visit. ?It appears that you can buy snacks AND great souvenirs here! ?

What are your favorite shopping experiences in the Magic Kingdom? ?I'd love to hear in the comments!

Thank you for joining me today. Your next stop on the Magical Blogorail Loop is Heidi's Head.

Kathleen Gage: What You Absolutely Must Do Once You Write a Book!

    Guest post by Kathleen Gage

?Writing the book is the easy part. Then begins the work.?

This is a statement very few authors want to hear, yet those who pay heed to it are the ones who will sell books.

Many authors live with the mistaken belief that all they need do is write their book and the rest will take care of itself. They think the book will take on a life of its own and somehow, someway be found by an agent. The agent would then find a big name publisher. The big name publisher would get the author on a bunch of major shows. The shows will fuel sales, and the book miraculously becomes an Amazon.com and New York Times bestseller.

This scene unfolds countless times with naive authors. The fact is, as an author it is up to you to take control of marketing and promoting your book.

    Power Up for Profits banner

If you?re serious about selling books you have to put more effort into marketing your book than writing it.

Recently I surveyed a group of several hundred authors. ?What?s your greatest challenge with marketing and selling your book?? was the only question I asked.

    The results were as follows:

    38% knowledge
    33% time
    17% money
    7% fear
    5% other

Sadly, even when many authors are told they must market their book, they fail to get into massive action to raise awareness about their works.

Three of the most effective marketing strategies are:

    Endorsements

    Guest blogging

    Email marketing

Endorsements are simply when others say how good a book is rather than the author blowing his or her own horn. Don?t get me wrong, I believe we need to blow our own horn, but as in the case with my most recent book, Power Up for Profits, I have the likes of Suzanne Evans, Peggy McColl, Dr. Joe Vitale, John Kremer, Eva Gregory, Adam Urbanski, and Steve Olsher giving glowing endorsements.

Within my industry the above mentioned names carry a lot of weight. If someone is considering whether or not to buy my book, endorsements from industry experts can be a huge part of the final decision the buyer makes.

Guest blogging opportunities are likely one of the best ways to reach new readers, yet a very underutilized resource.

Since you like to write anyway (well I?m assuming you do since you?re a writer), it?s simply a matter of reaching out to the right blog owners to offer a featured blog post.

The easiest way to create ample guest blogging opportunities is to make sure your writing is viewed in locations such as article directories, forums, and your own blog.

When a blog owner can review your writing, they will be more likely to invite you to contribute to their blog rather than taking a huge risk with someone who has nothing published online.

Email marketing is an absolute must do. However, in order to do so, you need a list of subscribers.

Whenever I release a new book or information product I always let my opt-in subscribers know.

Start now to build your list to reap the benefits for years to come.

Here?s a bonus strategy?? offer live presentations. Speaking engagements are one of my personal favorites. I love the platform and love when I connect with my audience. When you are in your zone and you connect with an audience, they are eager to buy your books.

To get the most out of your marketing efforts you need to implement a multi-pronged approach for your books ? pre-launch, launch and post-launch.

Pre-launch should start as much as six to twelve months before your book is published. Use pre-launch as an opportunity to build your opt-in list, reach out to joint venture and affiliate partners, contact the media, and secure interview and guest blogging opportunities.

Launch happens shortly after the book is published. To get the most out of your marketing efforts plan to have a very targeted promotions campaign for a specific period of time for the book. One of the main objectives is to increase the book?s position on Amazon. Include guest blogging, interviews, webinars, teleseminars, and email marketing.

Post launch is what you do once the book is published, you have had a very targeted short term, highly focused promotions and now the novelty has worn off. Post launch is an ongoing process that includes many of the same elements as the launch but it?s more spread out and not as frenzied. By having the long term in mind you will definitely enjoy greater success for your books.

Teams are still needed for the Emory Bellard-Spike Dykes Seton Kids Care-a-Van Golf Classic scheduled for Aug. 3 at Delaware Springs Golf Course. Officials are accepting sponsors at all levels for the annual fund-raiser for the Care-a-Van.

This year marks the 10th year for the fund-raiser that has raised an average of $200,000 per year. In nine years, 1.6 million dollars have been raised in support of health care for needy kids and families.

The Care-a-Van serves Kingsland, Granite Shoals, Marble Falls, Bertram and Burnet. The van goes to elementary schools in each of the communities, providing a wide range of needs.

The tournament field can hold 30 teams and 240 players in a double shotgun start. The tee times are 8 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. on Saturday Aug. 3. A tailgate party is also scheduled for Aug. 2 at the Galloway Hammond Recreation Center in Burnet.

"We have various sponsorships,?? said Becky Fox said, director of development for Seton Highland Lakes Hospital. Individual players can enter for $125 with a foursome set at $500. The tailgate party tables are $320 for eight people. The various sponsorships range from $1,000 to $10,000.

The tournament was started by Bellard and Dykes in 2003 to support better health care for the kids of the Highland Lakes.

Bellard passed away in 2011, but the tournament still carries his name and Dykes.

"It is really something that has helped to have their names associated with this tournament,?? Fox said. "Both of them are great men.??

Huma Abedin and Anthony Weiner: Why women are tiring of 'good wife' image

Huma Abedin was at the side of her husband Anthony Weiner again this week, but women are beginning to see the pageantry of spousal support amid sex scandals as a blow to their dignity.

    By Harry Bruinius,?Staff writer / July 25, 2013

Huma Abedin, alongside her husband, New York mayoral candidate Anthony Weiner, speaks during a news conference at the Gay Men's Health Crisis headquarters, Tuesday, July 23, 2013, in New York.

    John Minchillo/AP

?Putting yourself out there comes with a cost.?

So concludes a brief essay Huma Abedin wrote last week ? before the current scandal broke ? and published Wednesday in Harper?s Bazaar. It puts her ?out there? with a photo that takes up almost as much space as the essay: She stands smiling in a light mint-green dress, her left hand conspicuously displaying a traditional diamond ring and wedding band.

The title of the article in the women?s fashion magazine: ?The Good Wife.?

Now, as a scandal-hungry news behemoth turns its eyes toward Ms. Abedin, this carefully crafted image may be backfiring on the close adviser to potential presidential aspirant Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Given the particularly noxious details of her husband Anthony Weiner?s behavior, not to mention its timing, a chorus of women is beginning to challenge the predictable pageantry of spousal support during the frequent parades of sex scandals over the years.

Call it a changing paradigm in the political perils of power couples, but as Abedin expresses her love and support for her husband, standing by the disgraced former congressman as he admits, for the second time, to lurid details of online sexual dalliances, the costs of being out there as ?the good wife? may end up ruining her as well.

?Voters have almost become immune and accustomed to that image,? says David Johnson, CEO of Strategic Vision, an Atlanta-based political consulting agency. ?So to the public, that?s almost a playbook. They?ve come to expect that in a scandal.?

?But a lot of people are wondering now, what is the driving dynamic here?? continues Mr. Johnson, a veteran of political campaigns. ?Why would such a high profile woman, with such a career, continue to take this??

Indeed, this is the question most people have been asking for the past few days. The old adage, ?Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me,? has been peppering conversations about Abedin, especially among female voters.

And since she is so successful and powerful in her own right, the pageantry of the ?good wife? is not only starting to wear thin, it is starting to make some women angry.

SAMUELSON: Trend toward part-time jobs shows economy's weakness

WASHINGTON ? Just when you thought that America?s labor market was improving, with employment gains averaging about 200,000 a month, comes Mort Zuckerman, real estate magnate and chairman of U.S. News & World Report, throwing cold water on any optimism.

The truth, writes Zuckerman in The Wall Street Journal, is that, according to the Labor Department?s household survey, almost three-quarters of new jobs in 2013 have been part time. These need to be discounted in judging the economy?s strength, argues Zuckerman.

?At this stage of an expansion you would expect the number of part-time jobs to be declining, as companies would be doing more full-time hiring,? he writes. ?Not this time. In the long misery of this post-recession period, we have an extraordinary situation: Americans by the millions are in part-time work because there are no other employment opportunities.?

Ugh. To Zuckerman, work is increasingly catch as catch can, with firms relying more ?on independent contractors and part-time, temporary and seasonal employees.? He also blames the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare), which has been criticized as discouraging full-time hiring. Companies with fewer than 50 full-time workers don?t have to provide health insurance; nor are part-time employees (defined as less than 30 hours a week) entitled to company coverage. These are powerful deterrents to adding full-time workers.

On some counts, Zuckerman?s critique is overwrought.

For starters, it belittles genuine job progress. Gains since the recession?s trough in 2009, though inadequate, are still substantial. ?Companies (now) seem to be holding on to their employees,? says economist Beth Ann Bovino of Standard & Poor?s. Initial weekly unemployment claims peaked at about 650,000; now they?re about half that, 334,000 in a recent week, she says. The unemployment rate has dropped from 10 percent in October 2009 to 7.6 percent.

Nor is there much evidence that, in the recovery, part-time workers have represented a disproportionate share of new jobs. Economist Scott Anderson of the Bank of the West analyzed employment gains since January 2009 and found that in June part-time jobs accounted for 19.5 percent of total employment, ?exactly the average share ... since January 2009.? Part-time jobs sometimes surge for a few months, he noted, but then the rapid gains have been reversed.

Finally, Zuckerman doesn?t acknowledge that most part-time jobs are desired by workers. Of the 27 million part-time workers in June, slightly more than 19 million were voluntary: students splitting jobs and studies; retirees wanting extra income or human contact; and parents juggling the demands of jobs and child-rearing.

Still, the core of Zuckerman?s argument stands. This recovery, compared to its post-World War II predecessors, has been exceptionally weak. The number of part-time workers who would like full-time jobs (defined by the Bureau of Labor Statistics as 35 hours a week or more) has dropped very slowly. In May 2009, it peaked at 9.1 million; as of last month, it was 8.2 million. Moreover, the level was almost twice as high as before the recession ? 4.2 million in December 2006. As Zuckerman argues, this suggests many companies are quietly shifting employment practices.

Firms seek to minimize fixed labor costs by using contractors, ?temps? and part-timers. Obamacare intensifies the pressures, because of the incentives against hiring full-time workers.

Up to a point, part-time jobs reflect the flexibility of the U.S. economy ? but we are well beyond that point. They increasingly signify weakness.

Apple?s profit drops 22 percent as iPad sales slow

    News

Apple has reported a drop in profits on roughly flat revenue for the April to June quarter, though the results were ahead of analysts? expectations, providing something of a silver lining for the company.

Revenue was US$35.3 billion, up 1 percent from the same quarter in 2012, and profit was US$6.9 billion, down 22 percent. Earnings were $7.47, ahead of the $7.32 expected by analysts, according to Thomson Reuters.

Within seconds of the results being announced, Apple?s shares jumped in after-hours trading from US$419 per share to US$435.

The results weren?t a surprise as Apple had already said it was expecting a weak quarter. Sales were down in part because the company didn?t have an earnings-boosting big product launch in the quarter, and because it faces increasing competition from Android-based devices.

Sales of the iPhone hit 31.2 million during the quarter, a record for the period, according to Apple. But iPad sales were weaker, coming in at 14.6 million units, against 17 million in the same period of 2012. Sales of Mac computers were also down, from 4 million units to 3.8 million.

Gross margins on products were 36.9 percent in the quarter, down from 42.8 percent last year.

?We are especially proud of our record June quarter iPhone sales of over 31 million and the strong growth in revenue from iTunes, Software and Services,? Tim Cook, Apple CEO, said in a statement.

Apple?s earnings are closely watched by the IT and investing community, and only partly because of the results. Just as important is the company?s forecast for the current quarter, which in this case runs from July to September.

Apple said it expects revenue during the three-month period to be between US$34 billion and US$37 billion. In the fiscal fourth quarter of 2012 it had revenue of US$36 billion. Gross margins are expected to remain steady with the third quarter reported today.

What investors really want to know is when they can expect more new products from Apple. On that, Cook was typically guarded.

?We are really excited about the upcoming releases of iOS 7 and OS X Mavericks, and we are laser-focused and working hard on some amazing new products that we will introduce in the fall and across 2014,? he said in the statement.

    WhatsApp (for Windows Phone)

I was shocked to read a tech news article recently calling WhatsApp the "granddaddy" of messaging: I think ICQ would beg to differ. But among messaging apps intended to save users SMS texting costs, it certainly boasts a huge user base: In fact, WhatsApp peaked at one point as the 6th most popular paid app on the iTunes store, and Onavo ranks it as the eighth most popular social app. So there's a good chance that your iPhone-toting pals will be reachable?even more so now that it's free to install. In fact, the WhatsApp's CEO claimed that it had more users than Twitter?over a quarter billion. But is all this popularity warranted? I have to admit that I'm at a loss to explain it.

One of the few benefits of WhatsApp is that you can use it to converse with your Android, Blackberry, and iPhone-using friends as well as with other Windows Phone users. That's a big advantage over the excellent yet insular iMessage iPhone app, though it's not unique among today's messaging apps. An advantage iMessage boasts, however, is that it offers a desktop client?Mac-only, of course?that lets you text iPhone users from your computer.

    Setup and Signup
WhatsApp is free to install but there's a 99 cent a year subscription after the first year. I didn't see any indication of this subscription fee on the Windows Phone app store, but when I contacted WhatsApp to clear this up, they told me that the policy of one year free and 99 cents a year after that holds true for all platforms. So, apparently, after a year of using the app, it's pay up or go home.

To get started with WhatsApp, you'll need to enter your phone number, so if you have a device without cell service, you won't be able to use the app, even though it mostly uses Wi-Fi and cellular data to function. I installed and tested the app on a Samsung ATIV Odyssey. After you enter my number, WhatsApp sent my phone a text message. Happily, I just had to tap on the link in the SMS message to enter it into the app. After this, I was prompted to enter my name and choose a user picture. All my phone contacts were added, and for each of these, you can invite to use the app with an automatically generated email.

A differentiator of WhatsApp from messaging apps like Kik is that your actual phone number is your user id, rather than a username or PIN that you choose. But this approach has the side effect of limiting you to a single device and phone number. Another concern is that you're giving your mobile number to a small company that may at some point decide that a list of mobile numbers makes a good source of revenue if sold to marketers.

Connecting with my contacts proved more troublesome than for most communication services: I couldn't just search for them way you can in Skype: The Search icon on each WhatsApp page only searched within the contacts already listed on the current page, not worldwide users. And even for a contact who I knew to be on WhatsApp, and whose phone number I had in my phone contacts, the app suggested I send an email invitation to get the app, which struck me as ridiculous as well as frustrating. A simple "connect to Facebook friends" would have been more than welcome.

    Interface
The app has only three swipe-by sections: Favorites, All, and Chats. WhatsApp automatically adds your Windows Phone Favorites, though I'd prefer to keep them as separate WhatsApp favorites. For a service designed to overthrow SMS, that approach may make some sense. But I'm not sure why non-WhatsApp contacts were in the All section when I couldn't message them within WhatsApp.

Out on the phone's start screen, the app's live tile showed how many messages I had waiting, and banner notifications across the top of the screen let you know when any new messages come in, displaying with the first line.

    Texting
WhatsApp's texting interface is clear and pleasant enough, but I couldn't change the look or wallpaper. When you send a message, it shows up with a single check mark to show that it's been sent, and then when the contact actually reads the message, this mark turns into a double check symbol. You can include the usual selection of smilies and emoji in your chats, and the message page shows you when the other person is typing?but at the top, not in the message area, which would be clearer. WhatsApp's Group feature lets you do all this same stuff, but with multiple conversants.

That's all well and good, but frankly, all of it either is par for the course or falls short of what you get in other messaging apps: Kik does a better job of indicating message status, and Facebook Messenger offers stickers that are far more fun than the standard emoticons found in WhatsApp and the rest. One thing I was really surprised that I couldn't do in WhatsApp for Windows Phone was to delete a conversation?even most phones' built-in SMS clients can do this.

Okay, now, finally, for something WhatsApp does well: it lets you record audio and video clips to include in your conversations! Kik does let you include a photo or video you shoot on the phone, but not audio alone (for that, take a look at Voxer). WhatsApp also lets you send your location, along with a small map?a nice touch not found in most competitors (though it is available in the stock Windows Phone messaging app).

And then there's the matter of stability. At one point, after leaving my Windows Phone for a while, WhatsApp displayed the word "Resuming" with the Windows Phone activity dots dancing across the screen. This continued till I restarted the phone.

    What's Up with WhatsApp?
As far as I can tell, the only reason to use WhatsApp as opposed to Kik, Line, Skype, or Viber, is that people you know or meet use it. True, setup is a snap, but in terms of features, it's as unspecial as it gets. Add to this that you have to give a small company your cell phone number, and can't easily find other users, and may run into stability issues?you get the idea. Give it a pass, unless, again, it's the only thing used by your acquaintances.

'Guardians Of The Galaxy' Cast Are More Than A Match For The Avengers

    Guardians of the Galaxy

    by Brett White

Yahoo! Movies has a bit more insight from the "Guardians of the Galaxy" cast about their characters, providing some of the first soundbites from the actors since donning the extensive make-up and new muscles needed for their roles.

"It's the 'Anti-Hero Hero Movie,'" said Zoe Saldana, who plays the deadliest woman in the galaxy ? the assassin called Gamora. "These are thieves, rebels, assassins who come together to fight something actually much worse than them. And there's actually a lot of comedy ? the levity will be abundant."

But just because the team may bring the quips doesn't mean they don't also bring the pain. In fact, Saldana and Dave Bautista (who plays the appropriately named Drax the Destroyer) believe their squadron of five is more than a match for The Avengers Six.

"We're different than the Avengers," said Saldana. "The Guardians have much 'bigger' powers. We could totally kick Thor and Captain America's ass."

"Drax could definitely beat up Hulk and Thor," said Bautista. "Drax is an interesting creature. He's full of rage and he's full of honor. But the best thing about Drax is he's hysterical, without really meaning to be."

However tough the Guardians are, the actors who play them aren't to be messed with either. This interview from "Extra" features Chris Pratt going into detail about how dangerous Saldana has become since turning Gamora-green.

The Yahoo! Movies article also dives into the plot, including Thanos' confirmed involvement, why Djimon Hounsou signed on, and just how extensive Chris Pratt's diet-change has been on set.

"Guardians of the Galaxy" lands in theaters on August 1st, 2014.

Official: BMW i3 to start at $44,950* in Canada

With a week to go before the global debut of the BMW i3, BMW has announced Canadian pricing for its first-ever production electric vehicle. The all-electric version of the i3 goes on sale in the second quarter of next year with a starting price of $44,950 (*not including delivery or Government tax incentives).

Some of the pricing elements for the i3 that BMW continues to withhold are the cost of the model using a gasoline motorcycle engine as a range-extending generator, or that of the DC Fast Charge option. This latter feature will allow the i3's depleted lithium-ion battery pack to get an 80 per cent charge in just 20 minutes; for comparison's sake, the DC quick charge feature is a US$750 option on the 2014 Chevy Spark EV.

Sure, we've already driven the BMW i3, but the production version of the BMW EV ? promising the interior space of a BMW 3 Series ? will be unveiled next week at simultaneous ceremonies in New York, London and Beijing. Scroll down for BMW's brief press blast regarding its upcoming i3.

    BMW i3 Pricing Announced.

Richmond Hill, ON. BMW Group Canada today announced the base price of $44,950 for the BMW i3, the company's first all-electric series production vehicle. The BMW i3 will be available to customers in Canada in the first half of 2014.

Ian Robertson, Member of the Board of Management, Sales and Marketing BMW, stated in Munich: "The BMW i3 heralds the dawn of a new era for individual mobility and for the BMW Group. True to a genuine BMW, the BMW i3 has strong emotional appeal, outstanding product substance and a guarantee of sheer driving pleasure. With this leading-edge vehicle and attractive price, we will provide customers with a compelling offer for electromobility."

The BMW i3 will celebrate its international premiere on 29th July at parallel events on three continents in the megacities of London, New York and Beijing.

BMW i3 products and services will be sold via a multi-channel sales model, comprised of authorized BMW i partners, a Customer Interaction Center (CIC) as well as an online platform. All sales channels will be fully networked and customers will be able to personalize their entire purchasing process to suit their needs. Some markets will also introduce a mobile sales force, a sales team which will be available to customers outside the traditional showroom.

BMW i has adopted a holistic 360? approach to address people's e-mobility concerns. It ensures that customers will be able to meet their mobility needs with the pure electric BMW i3 ? even beyond a range of 150 kilometres.

To achieve this, BMW i will support customers with a four-pillar approach of premium services:

Home charging: Quick and convenient charging is possible either with the home charging station offered by BMW i or at any public charging station that uses a Level 2 SAE J1772 charging system. DC fast charging, using the SAE DC Combo-Fast Charger, will be available as an option. From a public fast-charging station, it will provide an 80 percent charge from a fully depleted battery in just 20 minutes.

Public charging: The BMW Group will have partnerships with public charging providers in all countries where BMW i models are introduced. The company is working towards charging standardization and is involved in setting up a comprehensive network of charging stations.

Flexible mobility: The BMW Group will create a whole new mobile lifestyle built around a range of mobility services ? such as the car-sharing initiative, DriveNow, which has over 130,000 members. Customers will also have access to rental cars with combustion engines for longer trips.

Assistance Services: Customers will be able to utilize services such as ConnectedDrive apps and future roadside services such as mobile recharging equipment.

BMW i3 customers will also have the choice of a range of attractive packages for financing, leasing, insurance, vehicle services and innovative mobility services, which will be tailored to suit the unique concept of the BMW i3.

    About BMW i. BORN ELECTRIC.
BMW i stands for visionary vehicles and mobility services, inspirational design and a new interpretation of premium that is strongly defined by sustainability across the entire value chain. With BMW i, the BMW Group redefines the concept of individual mobility. The BMW i3 is the world's first premium car designed from the ground up to be powered by an electric drive system with revolutionary lightweight construction. The result is hallmark BMW driving pleasure in undiluted form, delivered with zero emissions and an engaging intensity unmatched by any electrically powered vehicle.

Richmond Mayor Gayle McLaughlin on city's bold plan to stem foreclosures

The City of Richmond was hit hard when the housing bubble burst ? about 12,000 homeowners there are underwater. That?s roughly half of all mortgage holders in the city.? Richmond?s City Council recently approved a radical new plan to use eminent domain to buy underwater mortgages and resell them to beleaguered homeowners at lower prices. Richmond mayor Gayle McLaughlin spoke with KALW's Holly Kernan about her city?s radical plan to help homeowners drowning in debt.

GAYLE MCLAUGHLIN: Simply put, this is the city buying mortgages that are likely to end up in foreclosure and negotiating new mortgages so that homeowners can afford them and stay in their homes.

HOLLY KERNAN: And you're hoping that Richmond may start a movement.

MCLAUGHLIN: Absolutely, a national movement is what is needed. The lenders, the banks, the greed that started this problem, cannot fix this problem. They do not have a solution. I've met with some of these servicers who are representing the banks and they have clearly not been able to even articulate a solution, much less implement one. So we in Richmond are showing that we are willing to provide a solution and we think it is taking off nationally and needs to continue to do so.

Janet Napolitano replacement list grows for Homeland Security

Janet Napolitano is stepping down as head of the Department of Homeland Security. Republicans promise a 'spirited debate' over the controversial department?and Napolitano's replacement.

The hunt is on for a new head of one of the largest ? and most controversial ? parts of the federal government, the one that oversees immigration, natural disaster response, and terrorism in a post-9/11 world.

Janet Napolitano is leaving as head of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to assume the presidency of the?University of California?system of higher education ? the top tier of the state?s system of public colleges and universities with 10 campuses (including UC Berkeley and UCLA), more than 220,000 students, more than 170,000 faculty and staff, and a budget of about $24 billion.

In a way, it?s a move to a smaller institution.

DHS is even more massive: It?s the third-largest federal department, with a budget of $48 billion, a staff of 240,000, and 22 agencies under its bureaucratic budget, including the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the?Transportation Security Administration?(TSA), US Customs and Border Protection, US Citizenship and Immigration Services, US Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the US Coast Guard, the Secret Service, and cybersecurity operations.

Rep. Mike McCaul, (R) of Texas, who chairs the House Homeland Security Committee, already has his short list of replacements for Secretary Napolitano:

Retired Coast Guard commandant Thad Allen, New York City Police Commissioner Ray Kelly, and William Bratton, who headed police departments in New York, Los Angeles, and Boston.

"I think any three of those coming in would gain much respect from House Republicans and could help us at a time when we're really trying to push this border security measure out of the House of Representatives," the Republican congressman from Texas said on "Fox News Sunday."

FILE - In this Sept. 27, 2012 file photo, British author J.K. Rowling poses for photographers during a photo call to unveil her new book, entitled: 'The Casual Vacancy', at the Southbank Centre in London. British author J.K. Rowling confirmed Sunday, July 14, 2013 in a statement released by her publicist that "The Cuckoo's Calling", a detective novel which won critical acclaim, was penned under her pseudonym Robert Galbraith. (AP Photo/Lefteris Pitarakis, File)

(AP) ? An ex-military man tries his hand at writing, publishes a debut detective novel, and wins critical acclaim. But here's the twist in the tale: The true identity of the author is none other than "Harry Potter" creator J.K. Rowling.

It's impressive literary wizardry by Rowling, who said she relished the freedom of writing "The Cuckoo's Calling" under her pseudonym, Robert Galbraith.

"I hoped to keep this secret a little longer because being Robert Galbraith has been such a liberating experience," she said in a statement released by her publicist on Sunday. "It has been wonderful to publish without hype or expectation, and pure pleasure to get feedback from publishers and readers under a different name."

"The Cuckoo's Calling," a story about a war veteran turned private investigator who is called in to probe the mysterious death of a model, was published to rave reviews in April by Sphere, part of publisher Little, Brown & Co.

The Sunday Times claimed it was investigating "how a first-time author with a background in the army and the civilian security industry could write such an assured debut novel" when it connected the dots. The paper said clues included the fact that Rowling and Galbraith shared the same agent and editor, and that Little, Brown published Rowling's novel for adults, "The Casual Vacancy." It also said the book's style and subject matter resembled Rowling's work.

Rowling's publicist confirmed the paper's detective work was correct, and the news helped the novel climb straight to the top of Amazon's best-selling list Sunday.

It's also left Britain's bookstores unprepared.

Jon Howells, a spokesman for Waterstones, one of the country's biggest bookselling chains, said it had only a handful of copies of "The Cuckoo's Calling" scattered around the country ? and they probably sold out on Sunday.

He added that Rowling's feat was "the best act of literary deception since Stephen King was outed as Richard Bachman back in the 1980s." King said he wrote disguised as Bachman so that he could publish more books each year.

In her statement, Rowling thanked her editor David Shelley, the publishing staff who worked on the book without knowing her identity, and the reviewers who praised it without knowing about her authorship.

She added that "Galbraith" planned to keep writing the series, and her publisher said that the second book is expected to be published next summer. Now that her identity is revealed, Little, Brown said "The Cuckoo's Calling" will be reprinted with a revised author biography.

On its website, the publisher marketed the book as a classic crime novel in the tradition of P.D. James and Ruth Rendell. It said the novel, whose central character is named Cormoran Strike, was the first of a series of crime novels to come.

The publisher described Galbraith as an ex-military man, married with two sons, who wrote the novel based on experiences from his military life. Revealingly, it also stated that Galbraith was a pseudonym.

The book received many favorable reviews, including critics who called it "a scintillating debut novel" and who praised Galbraith for his "superb flair as a mystery writer."

Crime novelist Duane Swierczynski said he admired Rowling for choosing to publish in disguise.

"I read the novel, loved it, and wrote an enthusiastic blurb in early January," he said. "Galbraith sounded like someone I'd love to have a beer with. This is still the case, mind you."

Rowling recently turned to writing for grown-ups after becoming the world's most successful living writer with the "Harry Potter" books, which sold more than 450 million copies worldwide.

Reviews for her highly-anticipated novel "The Casual Vacancy," published last year, were mixed. Some praised the book, a bleak tale about class warfare and the darker sides to a community in small-town England, for tackling difficult subjects, but others said it lacked the magic touch that made Rowling's books of wizardry so popular.

Top 5 Energy Stocks To Watch For 2014

?The majority of the nation's 18-wheeler truck fleets will be fueled by natural gas in seven years.

    ?

This is what billionaire energy investor T.?Boone Pickens told the New York Times last week. Pickens has been pushing for natural gas as a transportation fuel for decades.

    ?

Over the past few years, his arguments have started to make more sense. New technologies have helped the U.S. uncover?a massive supply of natural gas. That pushed prices down and made it economical for transportation companies to switch from diesel to natural gas.

    ?

I've been writing about this trend for years. Subscribers to my Small Stock Specialist newsletter have made as much as 116% from buying natural gas transportation stocks early.

    Advisors' Opinion:
    • [By Ken Sweet]

Natural Gas producers, such as Cabot Oil & Gas (COG), have been among this year's best performing stocks, helped by higher energy prices and heightened interest in the exploration of oil shale and other rock formations for alternative fuel sources.

Cabot Oil owns drilling rights in the Marcellus shale, a geological formation in the Appalachians containing massive quantities of natural gas.

While Marcellus shale has large quantities of natural gas, drilling efforts are still too early to have a meaningful impact on Cabot's business. The company recently reported an adjusted profit of $20.7 million, or 20 cents a share, giving Cabot a hefty price-to-earnings ratio of 52. That type of ratio puts Cabot shares up there with dotcom names like Netflix (NFLX).

Many analysts remain bullish on Cabot. Bank of America analysts recently upgraded their price target on Cabot shares to $105.
