(Reuters) - Canadian trucker TransForce Inc reported a big rise in second-quarter profit on Friday, reflecting gains from an efficiency drive and acquisitions.
Shares in the Montreal-based transportation and logistics company, which also announced a share buyback plan, rose more than 7 percent on the Toronto Stock Exchange after the news.
"While end market conditions are far from buoyant, we believe that TransForce can continue to grow earnings through a combination of improving operating efficiency and additional acquisitions," said National Bank Financial analyst Cameron Doerksen in a note.
Healthy free cash flow and a new credit facility help position TransForce to increase its acquisition activity over the next six months and buy back its shares, the analyst added.
TransForce said it had agreed to a new credit facility, extended to 2015 and increased to C$800 million ($792 million) from C$650 million, with more favorable terms and covenants.
The company, which has operations across Canada and the United States, said net income in the April-June period rose 30 percent to C$34.1 million, or 34 Canadian cents a share, from C$26.2 million, or 27 Canadian cents a share, a year earlier.
Closely watched EBIT, or earnings before finance income and costs and income taxes, rose 39 percent to C$69 million, which Doerksen said bettered his C$59 million forecast. The EBIT margin increased to 8.5 percent of revenue from 7.6 percent.
Revenue rose 25 percent to C$812 million, largely from acquisitions of Loomis Express, IE Miller and Quick X, TransForce said.
The company said it would buy back up to 7 million shares, or 7.3 percent of its outstanding shares, over the year.
Competitor Mullen Group Ltd posted a 40 percent fall in second-quarter profit on Wednesday due to foreign exchange losses.
TransForce shares, which have gained more than 30 percent year-to-date, were C$1.18 higher at C$17.77 on the Toronto Stock Exchange at midday on Friday.

Using a clean, damp cloth, wipe down the surface where you are going to apply the tape. This removes dust that would prevent the tape from bonding; if the tape doesn't bond, paint will get under it and you'll be left with a messy line when you remove the tape.
Apply the tape to the edge, but take care not to stretch it as you press it into place. Finish by burnishing the tape onto the surface using a metal or plastic putty knife.
Spread the paint and let it dry to the touch before stripping the tape. If you're really concerned about leaving a clean edge, carefully run a utility knife along the paint line to score it before removing the tape. Now gently pull the tape off the surface. ST. LOUIS (AP) ? The widest drought to grip the United States in decades is getting worse with no signs of abating, a new report warned Thursday, as state officials urged conservation and more ranchers considered selling cattle.
The drought covering two-thirds of the continental U.S. had been considered relatively shallow, the product of months without rain, rather than years. But Thursday's report showed its intensity is rapidly increasing, with 20 percent of the nation now in the two worst stages of drought ? up 7 percent from last week.
The U.S. Drought Monitor classifies drought in various stages, from moderate to severe, extreme and, ultimately, exceptional. Five states ? Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri and Nebraska ? are blanketed by a drought that is severe or worse. States like Arkansas and Oklahoma are nearly as bad, with most areas covered in a severe drought and large portions in extreme or exceptional drought.
Other states are seeing conditions rapidly worsen. Illinois ? a key producer of corn and soybeans ? saw its percentage of land in extreme or exceptional drought balloon from just 8 percent last week to roughly 71 percent as of Thursday, the Drought Monitor reported.
And conditions are not expected to get better, with little rain and more intense heat forecast for the rest of the summer.
"Some of these areas that are picking up a shower here and there, but it's not really improving anything because the heat has been so persistent in recent weeks, the damage already is done," said Brian Fuchs, a climatologist at the National Drought Mitigation Center at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln. "Realistically, the forecast going forward is a continuation of warm, dry conditions through the end of August easily, and we may see them in the fall."
Some are reacting to the drought with inventiveness. At Lake DePue in Illinois, the dangerously low water level threatened to doom an annual boat race that's a big fundraiser for the community. Hundreds of volunteers joined forces and built a makeshift dam out of sandbags before hundreds of millions of gallons of water were pumped in from a river. By Wednesday, the effort had added 2 feet to the water level, doubling the lake's size and saving the race.
In other areas, communities are instituting water restrictions and asking people to voluntarily conserve.
The drought stretches from Ohio west to California and runs from Texas north to the Dakotas. Only in the 1930s and the 1950s has a drought covered more of the U.S., according to National Climatic Data Center in Asheville, N.C.
Rain-starved Oklahoma could get a brief respite with perhaps a quarter of an inch possible through sunrise Friday, the National Weather Service said.
But that won't be of much help to people like Clinton rancher Paul Schilberg, who would sell his herd of Black Angus cattle if he didn't stand to lose maybe $2,500 per head for the animals he usually buys for more than $3,000. With the grass and forage dead from lack of rain, he's been forced to buy hay.
"I'm feeding just like I would during the winter time," he said.
Nationwide, ranchers have been selling off large numbers of animals they can't graze and can't afford to buy feed for. The nation's cattle inventory, at 97.8 million head, is the smallest since the U.S. Department of Agriculture began a July count in 1973.
Mark Thompson, a professional farm manager with about 1,200 acres of corn and soybeans near Fort Dodge, Iowa, said good land management practices including no-till farming could help crop farmers muddle through.
"Eastern Iowa is in worst shape than we are," he said. "Right around here, we're still at the tipping point, but conditions have improved somewhat, even though last night's rain wasn't widespread."
Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback declared a drought emergency in all of the state's 105 counties this week and urged residents to conserve as much water as possible as the drought becomes more intense. The latest Drought Monitor report, which covers conditions through Tuesday, lists 73 percent of Kansas in an extreme drought, up 9 percent from a week earlier.
Brownback's move allows farmers, ranchers and communities to draw water from 28 state fishing lakes. Tracy Streeter, the Kansas Water Office's director, said Thursday there was adequate supply in the state and U.S. Army Corps of Engineer lakes to meet the demand.
"Even today, the lake elevations are good, all things considered," Streeter said.
He said ranchers can take 4,000 to 5,000 gallons of water at a time on semi-trucks loaded with tanks, but that's not a permanent solution. "Folks can't do that long term because of the cost of hauling the water. If they are buying feed, too, they may just have to sell the cattle."

As part of its 75th anniversary celebrations, the Kitchener-Waterloo Association of Realtors (KWAR) sponsored a native gardening project at the Huron Natural Area (HNA). Spanning over 250 acres, the HNA is an awe-inspiring destination and one of the most valuable natural areas in Waterloo region, says the board.
Realtors and their families gathered recently with their green thumbs at the ready and planted hundreds of flowers and shrubs, all of which are native to Ontario, at the entrance of the HNA. The goal of the project is to educate people about native species while increasing and maintaining the local biodiversity of the HNA. Students from the local school boards regularly visit the area to study the ecosystem.
KWAR also donated $4,500 to the City of Kitchener to assist in the revitalization and maintenance of the HNA.

11-year-old died Saturday from heart failure after he was pulled off of life support, according to Channel 2 Action News.

<P>Kile Glover, stepson of singer <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/usher/artist.jhtml">Usher Raymond</a> and biological child of ex-wife Tameka Foster Raymond, died Saturday morning (July 21), according to Channel 2 Action News.</P><P>Kile was taken off of life support Saturday morning and died from heart failure according to a family friend, weeks after the 11-year-old was involved in a tragic <a href="http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1689206/ushers-stepson-declared-brain-dead-after-jet-ski-accident.jhtml">Jet Ski accident</a>. Kile was declared brain dead two days after the July 6 accident, and the family struggled with the decision to remove him from life support hoping for a turn in his condition.</P><P>"We know God's in control, and are leaning on our faith in Him and His word at this most difficult time," the family told CNN in a statement weeks ago. "We firmly believe in the power of prayer and ask that you all continue to pray and lift Kile up, as it's the best way we can all support him now."</P><P>Earlier yesterday Tameka tweeted a photo of Kile alongside his younger brother Cinco (Usher V).</P><P>Glover and a second victim, a 15-year-old girl, were struck by a Jet Ski while floating on an inner tube in Atlanta's Lake Lanier. Both children were airlifted to the Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston pediatric hospital. The girl is reported to have suffered from a cut on the head and a broken arm, while Glover took the brunt of the trauma to his head.</P><P>Atlanta's radio personality DJ Greg Street sent out a tweet earlier this morning where he expressed support for Tameka, Usher and Kile's dad Ryan Glover. "Lil RG is an Angel now, Ryan, Tameka, Usher & the whole Glover Family we gotta make him proud," he wrote.</P><P>The man driving the jet ski has been identified as 38-year-old Jeffrey S. Hubbard, a family friend. At this time the police have determined that no drugs were involved, and no charges are being pressed.</P><P>Kile is the son of Tameka Foster, the ex-wife of singer Usher Raymond, and Atlanta TV executive Ryan Glover. Foster has three children from previous relationships prior to her marriage to Usher.</p>

I realize I'm about to step in it. And by "it," I mean the "Marissa Mayer is a female CEO -- and she's pregnant!" discussion that inevitably leads back to the "Can women have it all?" exchange that began last month.
As a single woman who does not have children, I already shared some thoughts on "having it all" here. I was trying to hold back on this new hot topic, but a PR pitch I received this morning pushed me right into it. It read:
So, you're not Marissa Mayer, 37-year-old newly minted CEO of Yahoo! and six-months pregnant with her first child. The picture of success for the modern woman. Can you still have it all? What lessons can be learned by Marissa's meteoric rise to the top of the business world? How can women yearning to get ahead without sacrificing family life emulate Marissa or make the best choices for themselves?
The next line was a pitch for a hair care product, because naturally, the best way to become CEO and get pregnant is with "gorgeous hair." But putting the idiocy of the PR pitch aside, are we now saying that Marissa Mayer is successful because of this equation: CEO + Mother-To-Be = Success? If it had been simply this one PR pitch, I would have put it aside. But the conversations this week around Marissa being a mother (to-be) on top of being a female CEO were already beginning to wear on me. Whatever future success I had with my career and my business, would I ever be seen as a true modern woman success story without also juggling motherhood?
Nearly 50 percent of American women are childless. While the majority of women -- about 80 to 85 percent -- become mothers eventually, most highly educated, high-income earning women like Marissa Mayer have their first baby later in life. Marissa, who turned 37 in May, will be one of the 14 percent of first-time moms who have a first birth at age 35 or older. And in general, Marissa and her college-educated cohorts are more likely to get married later than the national average (Marissa was married in 2009) and are most likely to become mothers only once married. (Only 2 percent of women age 35 and older were single at first birth in 2008, although that nuzmber is expected to grow.)
It was the line: "The picture of success for the modern woman" that really got me. Not all women can be mothers. Not all women want to be mothers. Not all women will be mothers. And not all women should be mothers. So as long as we pin "success for the modern woman" with motherhood, we will undermine some of the most gifted women in this country -- and those girls and women who aspire to be like them. Is Oprah Winfrey not a success? Is Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor not a success? Is the former United States Secretary of State, Condoleezza Rice, not a success?
Furthermore, Marissa has had the good fortune and ability to fall in love, get married and conceive a child, but she's not actually yet a mom. Does simply being pregnant while having an extraordinary career make you a greater success as a woman?
I have sincere respect for mothers (all mothers -- working mothers, stay-at-home mothers, etc.) and I always expected and wanted to be a mother myself. I support the challenges moms face having to or wanting to do things outside the context of motherhood. But when we say that success is only achieved when one does those things along with being a mother, we cast aside the women who are not mothers as if they are not eligible to be a "picture of success for the modern woman."
I wish Marissa all the best in all her endeavors, personal and professional. Success is relative to each person's potential. And I have a feeling she's only just begun.

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) ? Home improvement season is in full swing. Many general contractors and companies hire subcontractors for large remodeling projects or specifically for electrical work or plumbing. But if you?re not careful, that home remodeling job can take a turn for the worst. In this week?s Angie?s List report, Jim Donovan explains why it?s key you do your homework when it comes to subcontractors.
Whether your adding an addition, remodeling your kitchen or renovating part of your home sometimes the contractor you hire will call on others for help.
?In a large project it?s not unusual for a contractor to hire subcontractors who specialize in certain trades whether it be a plumber, electrician, even a roofers. But it?s important for you as the consumer to know who they are hiring check them out as well,? said Angie?s List founder, Angie Hicks.
So ask for a list of subcontractors your contractor might use. Ask friends or family about them and check online reviews.
And if you?re doing a big job, talk to the general contractor about a lien waver.
That?s basically going to protect you against the contractor not paying the subcontractor because if the contractor doesn?t pay his subs, they could potentially put a lien against your property. If the contractor refuses to have a lien waver it?s a red flag and you should walk away,? said Hicks.

Types of Contractors
? General Contractor (GC): Type of manager who is in charge of overseeing the entirety of a project. For a home remodeling job, the GC will meet with the homeowner to go over the initial project details, estimate the cost of the project, draft a contract, hire workers and handle the daily operation of the job. General contractor usually don?t perform any of the labor, but instead hire skilled tradesmen as subcontractors.
? Subcontractor: A worker who is hired by a general contractor to perform the obligations of another contractor?s contract. Also referred to as specialty contractors or ?subs,? subcontractors are typically hired to perform a specialized type of labor. They are the plumbers, roofers, carpet installers and electricians who are essential to any large remodeling project. As the name implies, subcontractors work under contract with, and get paid by general contractors.
A nationwide Angie?s List poll found:
? When asked what aspects of the hiring process or contract were important ? 10 percent of the respondent said lien wavers.
What is a lien waver?
If a home improvement contractor fails to pay his employees or fails to pay for the building materials used in the project, a lien can be placed on your property and you, the property owner, can be held liable for the unpaid expenses if a lien waiver was not established.
? To avoid unexpected fees or liens, homeowners should consider always including a lien waiver or lien waiver clause in the project?s contract. With a lien waiver, when the project is successfully completed, both parties sign off and state that the contract obligations have been met, including the general contractor making all necessary payments to materials suppliers, subcontractors or vendors.
? If the general contractor doesn?t agree to sign off on the lien waiver, you can withhold payment until he or she has proved they?ve paid their suppliers or subcontractors.
? One of the most essential things to know about liens and lien releases is how they?re enforced in your area. Although the general principle is the same for most areas, each state or municipality has different standards for the application of liens and their releases.
Angie?s List Tips: Know your subcontractors
? Ask your general contractor for a list of subcontractors to be used on a project, and then check the subs out.
? Angie?s List recommends soliciting at least three bids, properly vetting contractors and subcontractors by checking references and verifying licensure (if applicable), bonding and insurance, and negotiating a detailed contract.
? Ask the contractor how long he/she has worked with the subcontractors. What is their experience working together?
? Insist on a lien waiver, which protects the homeowner from liability if the general contractor fails to pay the subcontractors.

Before I wrote my book, "The Irritable Male Syndrome," I thought I might call it "The Jekyll and Hyde Syndrome," since men often seem to change rapidly from "Mr. Nice" to "Mr. Mean."
In "The Irritable Male Syndrome: Understanding and Managing the 4 Key Causes of Aggression and Depression," I describe a number of key symptoms of IMS, including hypersensitivity. The women who live with these men say things like the following:
I feel like I have to walk on eggshells when I'm around him.
I never know when I'm going to say something that will set him off.
He's like a time bomb ready to explode but I never know when.
Nothing I do pleases him.
The men don't often recognize their own hypersensitivity; their perception is that they are fine but everyone else is going out of their way to irritate them. The guys say things like:
Quit bothering me.
Leave me alone.
No, nothing's wrong. I'm fine.
Or they don't say anything. They increasingly withdraw into a numbing silence.
One concept I have found helpful is the notion that many of us are "emotionally sunburned," but our partners don't know it. We might think of a man who is extremely sunburned and gets a loving hug from his wife. He cries out in anger and pain. He assumes she knows he's sunburned so if she "grabs" him she must be trying to hurt him. She has no idea he is sunburned and can't understand why he reacts angrily to her loving touch. You can see how this can lead a couple down a road of escalating confusion.
Why Do Men Suddenly Become Hypersensitive And Irritable? Could It Be We Don't Feel Attached?
Here's a letter I received recently:
"Last month a man came home from work with my husband's face but he did not act at all like the man I married. I've known this man for 30 years, married 22 of them and have never met this guy before. Angry, nasty and cruel are just a few words to describe him. He used to be the most upbeat, happy person I knew. Now he's gone from Mr. Nice to Mr. Mean. In spite of how he treats me I still love my husband and want to save our marriage. Please, can you help me?"
Both the man and the woman are baffled. What's going on here? The answer may lie in ways in which we feel a loss of connection with our partner. We all struggle with vulnerable feelings in love whether we want to admit it or not. It's inevitable that we will hurt each other with careless words or selfish actions. While these occasions sting, the pain is often fleeting and we get over it quickly.
But according to Dr. Sue Johnson, founder of "Emotionally Focused Therapy," "countless studies on infant and adult attachment suggest that our close encounters with loved ones are where most of us attain and learn to hold on to our emotional balance." We are all sensitive to being rejected or abandoned by a loved one. And almost all of us have at least one hypersensitivity -- a raw spot in our emotional skin -- that is tender to the touch, easily rubbed and deeply painful. When this spot gets rubbed often enough, it can bleed all over our relationship.
When our need for attachment and connection is repeatedly neglected, ignored or dismissed, it results in two potential raw spots: feeling emotionally deprived or deserted/abandoned. It may not be obvious to us, but when a man becomes irritable and angry or hostile and blaming or withdrawn and cold hearted, it is often because he feels a disconnection from his partner. He feels rejected or not cared for. Of course, his hostile reaction often drives his partner farther away, which makes him even more fearful of loss. It's easy to get caught up in the blame game. He blames her and she blames him. But it doesn't have to be that way.
Both males and females are sensitive to emotional deprivation and abandonment. When women feel disconnected they often express it with sadness and hurt. When men feel disconnected they often express it as hypersensitivity and irritability. We often feel ashamed of our attachment needs, associating them with being children. But research shows that we need to feel attached to our mates just as much as we needed to feel attached to our mothers and fathers.

Google has already taken us on a trip to the frigid shores of Antarctica before. Now the search giant is back with even more panoramic images, this time from deeper inside the frozen continent. With help from the Polar Geospatial Center at the University of Minnesota and the New Zealand Antarctic Heritage Trust (not to mention a light-weight tripod and a fisheye lens), Street View can now bring to you the wonders of our most southern land mass. This isn't a short stroll in the footsteps of penguins either -- the ceremonial South Pole and Shackleton's Hut are among the numerous landmarks that get exposed to Google's image sensors.
