Journal of young Sir Arthur Conan Doyle published

The surgeon aboard the whaling vessel Hope was often covered in the blood of seals and other animals, his clothes frozen enough that he'd have to stand next to the ship's stove to thaw before undressing.

A first-time sailor, he wasn't supposed to take part in the clubbing of seals, but he did, and repeatedly fell into the frigid waters, nearly freezing to death.

A journal by the young man, written at age 20 in 1880, was published yesterday. ?The ?author? ?Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

Best known for creating the ingenious detective Sherlock Holmes, Doyle was first a surgeon, and went along on the whaling ship after a friend of his backed out, according to a review of the book by the Daily Mail.

The journey was intense and bloody, and the sailors' job was to take as many seals and whales as possible. As noted by the Smithsonian, though, Doyle's journal of the trip isn't all blood and gore, and contains Doyle's neat prose and lovely illustrations of the ship and the terrain it explored in the Arctic Ocean. ?

The killing of whales was common at the time, although Doyle did write about his feelings of sympathy for the hunted animals. He also describes the beauty of the icy landscape and awe he felt upon seeing enormous humpback whales, which the sailors didn't hunt because they contained too little oil to make their capture worthwhile. Whale oil was valuable for its use in lamps, candle wax and other applications.

Doyle wrote about his experience in both fiction and nonfiction, which helped him first catch the eye of publishers. Although he completed medical school and briefly practiced as a surgeon, he soon realized his true talent lay in writing.

The account of his Arctic voyage is called "Dangerous Work: Diary of an Arctic Adventure" (British Library Publishing, 2012) and is available from the British Library Shop.

Biden Blames Bush Administration for Deficit

FORT MYERS, Fla. - Vice President Joe Biden placed the blame for the ballooning deficit on the Bush administration today, arguing that the previous administration saddled the country with the burden of trillions of dollars in debt.

"Let's get serious here! How did we get this debt? Ladies and gentlemen, they put two wars on a credit card. Not paying a penny, not paying a penny, even though I introduced legislation to pay for that war. They voted against it," Biden said at the Wa-Ke Hatchee Park Recreation Center. "Two, they voted for a new entitlement program without paying one penny for it, and that was clear. Number 3, they added another trillion dollars in the tax cut for the very wealthy, so what's the result? These are the facts, folks, these are the facts.

"The result was by the time the reins got turned back over to Barack [Obama] and me, they had doubled the national debt in eight years, doubled the national debt in eight years," Biden added.

Biden recounted that within the first week of being in office, Larry Summers, a top economic adviser to the president, warned newly inaugurated President Obama of the deficit the country faced.

"We were sitting in the oval office, and Larry Summers, the chief economic adviser, and the economic team came in and said 'Mr. President, looking at this year's budget you are going to have a trillion dollar deficit.' He said, 'I haven't done anything yet,'" Biden said. "I'm serious. They said, 'No, Mr. President, the budget they passed, the budget they passed in October of last year guarantees no matter what you do you're going to have a trillion dollar debt this year in the budget.' A trillion dollar deficit to be precise."

Earlier in the week, the Washington Post fact checked President Obama's claim that the Bush administration's policies accounted for 90 percent of the country's current deficit and rated the assertion as false, since the president also pushed spending increases and tax cuts that added to the deficit.

Biden also claimed the Obama administration has proposed a plan that would reduce the deficit by $4 trillion over 10 years and has already decreased the deficit by $1 trillion

"We've already reduced the deficit. In four years, we'll reduce it by another trillion dollars. Ladies and gentlemen look, there's an easy way to do this. We have to make some difficult decisions. We've made them, but we've got to ask the very wealthy to pay more," Biden said.

"President Obama and Vice President Biden have no credibility on reducing our national debt," Amanda Henneberg, a spokeswoman for Romney, responded in a statement. "Over the last four years, the Obama-Biden team has presided over the largest increase in the national debt of any administration in history. And President Obama's latest spending plan is riddled with accounting gimmicks and tax hikes, rather than policies that will get our long-term debt under control. Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan will take immediate steps to cut spending and put our nation on track toward a balanced budget."

Biden mocked the GOP's concern about the debt, saying, "I love how they bleed over the national debt," but adding that Republicans would be unwilling to sign onto a deficit reduction plan that would promise $10 in cuts in spending in exchange for a dollar increase in revenue.

The vice president honed in on energy, touting the Obama administration's work as well as highlighting what he believes is the GOP's misunderstanding the role conservation plays in energy exploration and expansion.

"I love to hear them talk about their energy policy, which is 'drill baby drill,' right? OK, now let me say something about drilling. You all realize that there are more gas and oil rigs working today, pumping today, than all the rest of the rigs in the entire rest of the world. Do you know that? That's a fact. That's why we're importing less than we have in decades, that's why we're in the position we're moving in," Biden said.

"Ladies and gentlemen, there is an exponential, exponential supply of natural gas done right and renewable energy that's here in this country," he said. "That's why we doubled - and they voted against it - and Romney talked against it, we doubled the fuel economy standards for cars and trucks by 2025. That will save 12 billion barrels of oil over the period of time. I don't know how they don't think conservation is part of this. They, they sure don't know it."

VIENNA, MO (KTVI) ? Investigators say they have witnessed animals being ?starved to death? at a residence just north of Vienna on Highway 63. Maries County police were following up on a report of animal abuse when they say they found many animals without food or water.

Investigators applied for a search warrant and served it on the morning of September 27th. They found malnourished dogs, goats, pigs, cows, and horses. There were also at least six horse remains and numerous cow and pig remains.

Many of the animals have been seized by police and are in ?need of immediate medical attention?. A total of 40 animals have been seized.? More may be taken in protective custody at a later date.? Missouri State Animal Investigators, police and the Humane Society are from the Department of Agriculture are working on this case.

The owner of the property has not been charged at this time.? He may be facing numerous counts of animal neglect, and improper disposal of animal remains.? He is due in Maries County Associate court this Tuesday at 11am for an animal disposition hearing.? His name will not be released until criminal charges have been filed.

Federal Housing Finance Agency Reports Mortgage Interest Rates ...

Washington, DC ? September 27, 2012 ? (RealEstateRama) ? The Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) today reported that the National Average Contract Mortgage Rate for the Purchase of Previously Occupied Homes by Combined Lenders, used as an index in some adjustable-rate mortgage (ARM) contracts, was 3.56 percent based on loans closed in August. There was a decrease of 0.10 percent from the previous month. In March of 2012, FHFA began calculating interest rates using un-weighted survey data. The complete contract rate series can be found at http://www.fhfa.gov/Default.aspx?Page=251.

The average interest rate on conventional, 30-year, fixed-rate mortgage loans of $417,000 or less decreased 10 basis points to 3.74 in August. These rates are calculated from the FHFA?s Monthly Interest Rate Survey of purchase-money mortgages (see technical note). These results reflect loans closed during the August 27 ? 31 period. Typically, the interest rate is determined 30 to 45 days before the loan is closed. Thus, the reported rates depict market conditions prevailing in mid- to late-July.

The contract rate on the composite of all mortgage loans (fixed- and adjustable-rate) was 3.56 percent in August, down 9 basis points from 3.65 percent in July. The effective interest rate, which reflects the amortization of initial fees and charges, was 3.69 percent in August, down 9 basis points from 3.78 percent in July.

This report contains no data on adjustable-rate mortgages due to insufficient sample size.

Initial fees and charges were 1.07 percent of the loan balance in August, up 12 basis points from July. Eight percent of the purchase-money mortgage loans originated in August were ?no-point? mortgages, down 12 percent from the share in July. The average term was 27.5 years in August, unchanged from July. The average loan-to-price ratio in August was 75.8 percent, down 0.3 percent from 76.1 percent in July. The average loan amount was $256,900 in August, down $2,000 from $258,900 in July.

• Enrollment in a clinical trial of HE3235 for 6 months (but his disease subsequently progressed again).
• Treatment with docetaxel-based chemotherapy for 4 months (followed by palliative radiation therapy).
• Treatment with cabazitaxel-based chemotherapy, initiated in October 2010 (at which time his PSA level was > 5,400 ng/ml).

This sequence of treatments makes perfectly reasonable sense at a time when sipuleucel-T, abiraterone acetate, and enzalutamide were not approved therapeutic agents (although the patient may have been eligible for enrollment in the one or more clinical trials of abiraterone acetate or enzalutamide or other agents during this time frame).

What came next, however, was not exactly predictable:

• The patient?s condition stabilized within weeks.
• His PSA level demonstrated a progressive decline.
• Continued cabazitaxel-based therapy allowed him to come off pain medications and to resume his normal activities.
• As of January 2012, after 16 cycles of cabazitaxel, his PSA had declined by > 80 percent (to 994 ng/ml).

Colbourn further reports that the patient tolerated cabazitaxel well; needed only occasional dosing with myeloid growth factors for management of neutropenia; and experienced only mild diarrhea.

Why did this man respond so well to cabazitaxel, after relatively rapid failure in response to other forms of therapy? How can we optimize the likelihood that other such men could be identified with accuracy, such that cabazitaxel could be administered early? Is it possible that this man, if treated with cabazitaxel immediately after his radical prostatectomy, might have shown an even better response to treatment?

These are the sorts of questions that we need to be able to answer if we are going to be able to truly individualize treatment in the most appropriate manner for men with clinically significant prostate cancer. Confirming blog reports, The Associated Press found that a Verizon iPhone 5 accepts an AT&T "SIM card" ? a chip that identifies a phone to a network. The phone can then be active on AT&T's network.

It's the first time Verizon iPhones have been able to access AT&T's network without complicated hacking procedures. The feature gives Verizon customers the option to switch carriers rather than renewing an expired contract.

NEW DELHI ? India agreed Friday to open its huge market to foreign retailers such as Wal-Mart in a surprising decision that was part of a flurry of economic reforms aimed at sparking new growth in the country?s sputtering economy.

The Cabinet?s decision ? after a similar proposal was withdrawn under withering criticism last year ? immediately generated optimism that a government plagued by scandal was finally breaking out of the political paralysis that had stifled reforms for months.

?This is a landmark decision in India?s economic reforms process,? said Rajan Bharti Mittal, whose retail company, Bharti Enterprises, has a joint venture with Wal-Mart.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said the reforms were made to spur economic growth and to attract foreign investment.

??I believe that these steps will help strengthen our growth process and generate employment in these difficult times,? he wrote on his Twitter account, appealing for public support.

However, political opponents and even some allies, decried the decision to allow in international supermarket chains, saying it would hurt small retailers and farmers.

?(It) will lead to job losses for millions of our people,? D. Raja, a Communist Party lawmaker, told the NDTV news channel.

The Cabinet also agreed to allow foreign investment in airlines and to sell stakes in state-owned companies. On Thursday, the government decided to reduce fuel subsidies and allow the price of diesel to rise, a move hailed by the business community but criticized by political allies and opponents.

The decision on retail investment Friday would allow foreign firms to own a majority stake in multi-brand retailers here for the first time. However, individual states would have the right to decide whether to let the retailers operate from their territory.

States led by the ruling Congress party would be most likely to allow them, meaning the big cities of New Delhi and Mumbai would have new shopping options.

U.S.-based Wal-Mart, British-based Tesco PLC, French-based retailer Carrefour and others have been interested in entering India, a country of 1.2 billion people where retail is the second-biggest industry behind agriculture.

Commerce Minister Anand Sharma said India badly needed the infrastructure investment that would come from these firms. Currently, about 35 to 40 percent of produce rots before it gets to the stores, he said.

Under the Cabinet decision, at least 50 percent of the foreign investment would have to be in back-end infrastructure, such as processing, distribution and storage.

??It will generate large numbers of jobs in rural India for our men and women,? Sharma said.

The government said farmers would benefit because less of their produce would rot, small retailers would become more competitive and efficient and consumers will get lower prices and better quality. The policy would also bring in badly needed inflows of investment and foreign currency.

The government had agreed on the same proposal last year but then withdrew that decision because of protests from coalition partners, a capitulation that badly damaged its credibility with international investors.

Since then, economic growth has fallen, with business leaders and analysts blaming the government?s inability to make needed reforms.

Kunal Ghosh, a spokesman for government ally Trinamool Congress, said his party continued to oppose the plan but would not say whether it would withdraw support from the coalition.

The government relaxed rules on foreign investment in the broadcast industry and in power exchanges, which provides a platform for companies to buy and sell power.

The government also agreed to sell minority stakes in its oil, copper and aluminum companies as well as its Metals and Minerals Trading Corporation.

The main opposition Bharatiya Janata Party criticized the surprise decisions.

??We consider it as a betrayal of the country, betrayal of the Parliament by this government,? said Balbir Punj, of the BJP.

The government?s decision on airline investment would allow foreign airlines to own up to 49 percent of an Indian airline. India?s airline industry has expanded enormously in recent years, but only one airline has been able to turn a consistent profit. The government-owned Air India and the private Kingfisher have both suffered from labor strife and financial problems.

Aviation Minister Ajit Singh said the decision ??sends a very clear message to a sector that has been under stress.?

But it was not clear if any foreign airlines would be interested in buying a minority interest in some of India?s most struggling airlines.

The government also made a key change to its decision earlier this year to allow foreign retailers selling only a single brand to own 100 percent of their stores, a decision largely seen as aimed at bringing furniture retailer IKEA to India.

The previous decision forced the company to source 30 percent of their products from small cottage industries. Now, it can source that 30 percent from any Indian industry.

LG's latest L-series smartphone, the Optimus L9, has just breezed (elegantly) through the FCC's radio frequency trial-by-screwdriver. The dinner-jacket-white clad Android smartphone is part of the "L-Style design philosophy" from the Korean maker, which emphasizes budget panache over brute performance. As such, it's a handsome but plasticky device, with a 4.7-inch IPS screen, ICS, qtranslator language app, dual-core 1GHz CPU, 1GB of RAM, 2,150mAh battery and 5-megapixel shooter. Vodafone in Europe showed the price as €340 unsubsidized or €50 on contract, but a member of the L-series family has yet to cross the pond. However, a surprise peek of its Optimus L7 sibling as US Cellular's upcoming Splendor shows there's some hope for a stateside cameo.

Nintendo says Wii U will launch on Nov. 18

NEW YORK (AP) ? Nintendo's upcoming Wii U gaming console will start at $300 and go on sale in the U.S. on Nov. 18, in time for the holidays, the company said Thursday.

A "deluxe" version will sell for $350. It will be black instead of white and include extra features such as more memory, a charging stand and the game "Nintendo Land."

Nintendo Co. has been trying to drum up excitement for the Wii U, which is the first major gaming console to launch since 2006. The device has a touch-screen controller called the Wii U GamePad. It also plays games made for the original Wii.

Nintendo said the latest game in its wildly popular Mario franchise, "New Super Mario Bros. U," will be available when the new console launches. It will include new ways to play that use the GamePad. It will also offer new challenges for advanced Mario players, such as trying to complete a level without touching the ground. "Mario" and other classic games have long been Nintendo's main draw.

The company also announced new entertainment features for the console. Called "Nintendo TVii," the service collects all the ways users have to watch movies, TV shows and sports. This includes pay-TV accounts along with services such as Hulu and Netflix. The GamePad works as a fancy remote controller and will let viewers browse shows they can watch.

TVii "brings all of your services to one place," said Reggie Fils-Aime, president and chief operating officer of Nintendo of America.

So if you like the TV show "Modern Family," for example, it will pull in the show's episodes from every available source.

The service also captures scenes from live TV and displays them on the controller. Viewers can then comment on the scenes and share that on Twitter or Facebook if they want. With this feature, Nintendo is playing into what many people already do while they watch TV ? comment and share things with friends using a second screen such as a smartphone.

TVii will be available Nov. 18 as well, at no extra cost.

Among the games available on the Wii U will be Activision Blizzard Inc.'s "Call of Duty Black Ops II." The "Call of Duty" games have been holiday best-sellers for the past several years.

Who made the anti-Muslim video? What L.A. County knows but is not saying.

After being contacted by the FBI and State Department, L.A. County has blocked public access to the permit that was issued to shoot at least part of the anti-Muslim film. Permits name a film's writer, director, and producer, among others.

This means that answers to the question of who was behind ?Innocence of Muslims,? the?anti-Muslim project that sparked a wave of mob violence across the Middle East and may have created the cover for a deadly attack on US diplomats in Libya, now appear to be in the hands of?Los Angeles County officials. And they are not talking.

A US law enforcement official told the Associated Press Thursday that authorities believe that a 55-year-old Coptic Christian, a US citizen named Nakoula Basseley Nakoula,?is behind the film. A convicted felon, Mr. Nakoula has changed his version of events numerous times in interviews with various news outlets.

On Thursday, after being contacted by both the FBI and?the US State Department and on its legal counsel?s advice, the office of the CEO of L.A. County removed from public?availability what has been confirmed as the permit issued to shoot at least part of the anti-Muslim film. Permits are normally available online and by request from the county.

?This was done to give us time to make sure that we are not putting anyone in danger,? says Ryan Alsop,?assistant?CEO?of L.A. County, adding, ?we have up to 10 days to respond to any request, and we are just making sure that we don?t?endanger public safety.?

Paul Audley, president of FilmL.A., the nonprofit charged with issuing film permits for L.A. County, confirms that a permit was issued to Media for Christ, a conservative nonprofit based in Duarte, Calif., east of Pasadena, to shoot what eventually became ?Innocence for Muslims.?

The permit was pulled for a project titled ?Desert Warriors,? he says, but is quick to add, ?We do not get involved with the content of a movie because that would get into issues of free speech.?

It was a single day permit ? for Aug. 18, 2011 ? and is filed with Los Angeles County under permit number F00043012.

The filming took place at the Blue Cloud Movie Ranch in Santa Clarita valley, just north of Los Angeles, according to Mr. Audley.

Calls to Media for Christ on Wednesday and Thursday received denials of any involvement. A woman who identified herself as Diana said Wednesday ?we had nothing to do with the film.?

She acknowledged, however, that Steve Klein, an insurance agent and talk show host who appears every Thursday for an hour on its broadcasting outlet, hosting ?Wake Up, America,? was a ?consultant on the project.?
